Harmful chemicals and oil find their way into the oceans, making them hazardous for ocean life. Some creatures may escape the pollution, only to become victims of other life-threatening dangers:
• some countries hunt whales for scientific reasons, but sometimes the carcasses are used illegally for food despite strict hunting laws.
• Many dolphins and other sea creatures die when they are trapped in huge fishing nets.
• several well-known species of fish may eventually disappear because of overfishing. If shoals are caught more quickly than the fish can reproduce, the number decline.
• Many turtles have been forced away from the beaches where they breed, as hotels and tourism take over. Sometimes turtles have been deliberately killed.
