This is a truly lovely and gut wrenching story, @seki1. So many "what ifs" came to my mind. What if she decided not to wait until midnight? What if Tom had not wanted to ask her out? What if he had not called one more time? There would have been a life cut short, out of the temporary circumstances of grief and loss. I wonder if Tom will ever find out that he saved her life that night.
