I believe that. In fact, I experienced the same, I think. Different circumstances. Different players. But I also had cycle-breaking experiences that I suppose in dramatic terms one could say saved me from myself. You can't keep bad shit from going down and harming people. You can only find the pathways out of the wreckage. Hopefully healthy ones.
