This is so beautifully told, maam.sammy@maam.sammy. I really enjoyed reading it. You have mastered storytelling in the creative nonfiction genre!

And while his actions may not be excusable, they were a product of his environment and the circumstances he had been dealt.

I think this very idea is at the crux of everything. Either you believe that or you don't. It seems to me that people who are compassionate and caring tend to believe that we are all products of our heritage and circumstances. If we take that into consideration when we see people do bad things, that brings some understanding to the situation. Yes, accountability is important. But without that compassionate lens that takes into account circumstances and background, the only response is punishment. Do we help people to improve their lives and make better choices with that approach?

I think it's great that you have chosen teaching and helping people as your life's mission.
