This is inspired, lordtimoty@lordtimoty! It had me smiling all the way through.

The table held reminiscences of violent victories and yet other battles of the futility of war and the eventual stalemates of the trenches. The board itself was not antique despite its appearance, and, while it was widely known by the family that it was purchased at a gift shop at Heathrow Airport, family tradition maintained it was owned by the last Raj of India.

Absolutely love those lines. They give us insight into the personality of a family.

Also, you did well with the prompt. You stayed so tightly within the point of view of the character, that we never actually "see" her, or him. In other words, there must be some mechanism by which a narrator's characteristics become known to the reader, since the narrator is typically not going to tell the reader their name or describe their own features.

Ah, but there is such a mechanism! It's dialog. (Or dialogue.) Even with your narrator telling the story, he or she could carry on conversation with Grandpa, who could speak the narrator's name or comment on the narrator's features. (Yes, I have to tease you about the dialog thing!)
