There are some wonderful gems in this story, @dreemsteem! Like this one:
While the ride was in motion, the giddy music cast a spell over its riders but slowing to a stop, it seemed to trigger sadness with its sharp tones and flat moans.
That is so true. It exactly describes the contrast between the joy of the upbeat calliope music and the deflated feeling in the air when it winds down!
This is a story of contrasts, all around. An adventurer vs. a recalcitrant person who lives in fear. Roller coaster vs. carousel. I was so relieved when Paul comes to his senses and breaks free of the trappings that hold him down.
This reminds me so much of a story I wrote (currently circulating with flash fiction publications) where a couple comes to a crisis point after running through a rainstorm. She loves it, and he is cold and miserable, signaling a deep chasm between what they want in life. I won't tell you how it ends!
