Wednesday Walk - Snow, ice, mud, and muskrats - Actifit: March 23 2022
I walked out the long trail to the lake this evening. The lake is a wonderful destination any time of year, but right now I live to go to watch the progress of the receding ice.
One day soon local officials will announce “ice out” when the last of the ice has melted, but it will take another two or three weeks.
Once I got to the lake, I made my usual rounds on the docks and the bridge where I love to go for pictures, and then I realized the muskrats have come out of hibernation. The were scurrying around on the ice and jumping in and out of the water.
It was very brisk and cool with a rather fierce wind, after a full day yesterday of rain, and then waking to a fresh dusting of snow. But the weird weather patterns make for beautiful (or at least dramatic) skies.
The boatyard and docks are a bit lonesome this time of year.
Okay, back to the trail!
There are ponds along the trail, and most are still about 2/3 frozen. Ducks and geese use the ice for resting, as long as it’s still solid enough for them to stand on.
