On Saturday afternoon, Paul Ryan tweeted -- then quickly deleted --- this:
Paul Ryan: A secretary at a public high school in Lancaster, PA, said she was recently surprised her pay went up $1.50 a week ... she said that will more than cover her Costco membership for the year.
One dollar and fifty cents a week. $78 per year.
This is the generous middle-class "help" that Paul Ryan and conservative leaders believe is worth bragging about.
Every dollar in the pockets of middle-class families is valuable. But it's unacceptable that congressional leaders expect average workers to be thrilled with an additional $6 per month, while America's richest people and businesses rake in billions.
This tweet isn't an accident or a PR slip-up.
This is what Paul Ryan believes progress looks like. It's time to hold every single person in Congress who voted for this tax scam accountable in 2018.
We need living wages for working families. But there are so many more effective ways to deliver for the middle class than what this Congress has given them.
This bill costs us $1.5 trillion and causes 13 million to lose health care. Yet Paul Ryan believes and continues to tell us it was a great deal. It was only a great deal for his billionaire friends and corporate executives.
The middle class deserves better.
They deserve a plan that gives them the largest share of tax relief, instead of millionaires who don't need it. They deserve a plan that makes their tax cuts permanent, instead of corporations who certainly don't need handouts.
And they deserve representatives who know what real progress looks like.
Here's what we've gotten: A Speaker of the House who is so out-of-touch with most Americans that he sees $1.50 as something to brag about -- only to delete it, minutes later, when our pressure shows him just how clueless he really is.
We need to keep up that pressure: online, on the phone, and in-person. We need congressional leaders to know that this tax scam isn't good for the middle class, and no amount of spin will change that.
