People nowadays stay active on their gadgets 24/7. May it be because of their work, for entertainment, or for communication with their loved ones. We all know how rapid information travels in the media. Within just a few clicks we can be able to stay connected with people around the world. In our generation today, the media has become mainstream for everyone. It has become our primary platform for communicating and interacting with our peers, colleagues, and families. Despite how promising this may sound to you, there are still drawbacks with using media . One major drawback about this is the rampant issue of cyberattacks. Everyone who is using the media can be a victim of cyberattacks.A cyberattack is any deliberate attempt to gain unauthorized access to a network, computer system, or digital device in order to steal, expose, alter, disable, or destroy data, applications, or other assets and it does not only happen in huge companies but also in individuals like us. Data is the most valuable asset in the world. Data is the record of all your information in the media such as your demographic profile, your emails and even your credit card information you input. There are ways that we can prevent these cyberattacks:
Be aware of phishing attacks. Phishing is a type of a cyberattack that targets people using emails. To help prevent becoming a victim of phishing you need to always check the links that you click. Check the email addresses that you receive and lastly, use your common sense before filling up some information that is sensitive.
Be sure to backup and encrypt data that are very important especially in the business field. Employee information, customer information, and all other business data has to be backed up.
Keep your systems and softwares updated. Outdated softwares and systems have weaker security features than the updated ones. To help prevent breaches, your systems and applications must be up to date. Try to invest in a patch management system that will manage all software and system updates, keeping it up to date.
Install and activate your firewall. It is important to put your network behind the firewall. It is one of the most effective ways to protect your system from cyberattacks.
When using social media, check your privacy settings. As much as possible do not login in social media using public desktop computers such as computers in cafes. Do not accept friend requests from strangers. And do not share private information or bank info on social media.
When using handy gadgets such as android phones, iphones, and ipad. Always lock it when you are not using it. And use either fingerprint recognition, a secure PIN or unique gesture .Having the same password setup on all your social media can be dangerous. Once the hacker figures out your password, they can now have full access to everything in your system.Having different passwords setup for every application that you use is really beneficial to your security, and changing them from time to time will help you maintain a high level of protection against external and internal threats. And, Install tracking-gadgets app. In this way, you can track your lost gadgets.
When using the WIFI, always change the default password of your WIFI, and your admin password on your router. When using public WIFIs, only access sites that are important. Any device can get infected when connecting to the network. Turn off sharing, so that files, devices or logins aren’t discoverable. It is also advisable to use VPN or Virtual Private Network to cloak all of your important data.
In conclusion, prevention is the key to prevent data breaches. The above mentioned are a great help to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of cyberattacks.
