Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing to you from a beautiful little coastal village about 7 hours from Cape Town in South Africa!
Welcome to "Three Tune Tuesday", an initiative started by @ablaze. It is week 134 overall! My current pattern for how I will be contributing to TTT is to take the Hive Open Mic challenge Theme of the Week and give suggestions on how I would tackle it!
For those of you who are not familiar, the Hive Open Mic is a weekly challenge on the Hive Open Mic community for anybody who loves to sing. You don’t even need to play an instrument, a backing track or a cappella is also fine as far as I can tell!
Different artists are given the chance to choose a “Theme of the Week” that the posts should be based on. Often it can be difficult for people to think about easy songs that might fit that theme… so let me see if I can be of any assistance to the people who still might not know what to try by the time Tuesday comes around!
All right! Let’s get cracking!
Here is the post inviting everyone to participate in this week’s Hive Open Mic (Week 193):

As you can see, it was the turn of @chidistickz to pick a theme, and this week the theme is “Yeshua”! Now “Yeshua” is apparently the Hebrew name for Jesus.
BONUS SONG
“Shine Jesus Shine” – Traditional Hymn
There will be a lot of traditional hymns praising Jesus this week, so let me at least recommend one. I went to a High School where hymns were sung in the Assembly Hall, and the one that I still remember for its structure, catchiness and earnest emotions is “Shine Jesus Shine”! If any hymn can be called a “Banger”, it would be this one! Here’s the Hillsong version:
SONG NUMBER 1
What if you don’t want to do a traditional hymn? What other songs make mention of Jesus? How about:
“Jesus Take the Wheel” by Carrie Underwood – a beautiful song about how a near death experience makes a young mother rethink how she is living her life, and to do better in the future…
SONG NUMBER 2
“Jesus don’t want me for a Sunbeam” by The Vaselines / Nirvana
The Vaselines were the first to alter the song to become what is (in my mind at least!) a protest against some of the existential guilt organised religion seems to make people feel. However, I (and many of my peers) only know this song because of the famous Nirvana cover performed at their famous MTV Unplugged concert in 1993 here:
SONG NUMBER 3
“Personal Jesus” by Depeche Mode / Johnny Cash
Well, you could be inspired by the original version by Depeche Mode, but if you have one acoustic guitar (as many of us on Hive Open Mic do), perhaps you might want to check out the Johnny Cash cover. Yes, that’s right! Later in his career, Johnny Cash made some famous cover versions produced by Rick Rubin… there is just so much atmosphere despite the arrangement being acoustic and simple! The other famous example I can think of is the cover they made of “Hurt” by Nine Inch Nails!
So that's week 134 done and dusted! I hope that gave some people some ideas on how to tackle the Hive Open Mic Challenge this week? Perhaps I’ve even inspired one or two new people to give it a try? Please let me know!
