For those of you who are not familiar, the Hive Open Mic is a weekly challenge on the Hive Open Mic community for anybody who loves to sing. You don’t even need to play an instrument, a backing track or a cappella is also fine as far as I can tell!
Different artists are given the chance to choose a “Theme of the Week” that the posts should be based on. Often it can be difficult for people to think about easy songs that might fit that theme… so let me see if I can be of any assistance to the people who still might not know what to try by the time Tuesday comes around!

As you can see, it was the turn of 
That’s an interesting one – maybe it’s because I’ve been thinking about Politics lately that it seems to be a theme about songs with the song-writer giving a political opinion or perception. In fact I have recently written a political sort of song of my own that I hope to use for the theme.
But what other wonderful political covers could people choose?
Besides the very famous “Imagine”, with its rather Marxist ideology, John Lennon wrote several other songs that portrayed his political perception of the world. One that I’m sure I’ve mentioned before that I love to sing is “Working Class Hero”, which was also covered by Green Day:
Many people seem to think Bruce Springsteen’s song “Born in the USA” is just a super-patriotic song to sing along to on the 4th of July or at the Superbowl. However, if you actually read the verse lyrics you get an entirely different picture of Springsteen protesting against sending its army to Vietnam, and then how isolated and forgotten those War Veterans were once they came back…
Finally, I find this last song “Rich Men North of Richmond” by Oliver Anthony very interesting. I think if he had released this exact same song any time in 1960-2010, it’s fierce criticism of the Politicians and Elite Class from Washington DC (just north of Richmond) would have been seen as a liberal protest song.
Nowaday, to criticise the Government and Politicians gets you labelled as a right-winger. Seeing as the song was only released a couple of months ago, that is exactly what happened to Oliver Anthony, and his excellent song has been lauded by right wing political voices, and berated by left wing voices. The world is sure becoming a strange and polarised place, and that’s what my own song will be about when I share it on Thursday!
So that's week 130 done and dusted! I hope that gave some people some ideas on how to tackle the Hive Open Mic Challenge this week? Perhaps I’ve even inspired one or two new people to give it a try? Please let me know!
