Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing to you from Cape Town, South Africa!
Today, instead of singing a song, I thought I would just like to make a point to all of you on the HIVE Music Community…
Example 1
Look at this video of a guy playing a song in a local restaurant or something. There is definitely food being served that the audience is eating, and many of them are chatting to each other instead of focusing on the music. The sound balance is off, the guitar is loud, and the vocals are soft. Some random guy is trying to jam along to the artist on percussion (shaker, then cajon), but to me it looks like he’s never heard the song before in his life. To me this all looks like some kind of amateur open mic event:
Now let’s look at this video of the band “Black Pumas” playing their fabulous, soulful Grammy-nominated song “Colors” live in studio. The video has over 192 million views on Youtube:
Notice anything? Hopefully, dear reader, you are musical enough to realise it is the same song being sung by the same person!
Example 2
Let’s try another example closer to my home in Cape Town, South Africa… Look at this video of a young kid singing a song on a local early morning TV show. The kid looks shy, and his guitar sounds tinny with no bass spectrum at all. Perhaps you can tell that he has a distinctive tone to his voice. Can you tell that the song is actually a very good one?
Now, let’s look at this Official Music video on Will Linley’s YouTube channel. It has amassed over 900 000 views, which is an amazing success for a local South African artist singing in English! The song is an absolute banger and received loads of radio play for how instantly recognisable it is:
Notice anything? Yeah yeah, you’ve got it – it’s the same kid singing the same song! Obviously in the official video he has some other wonderful musicians helping to fill out the sound, and then has some great production to turn it into something so good and radio friendly!
Will Linley still seems humble and happy to take a photo with a fan (me) when he’s picking up flowers at the local petrol/gas station shop! Haha!
So, what is my point? Well, for both examples, my point is that many people wouldn’t have known that the song in the first video could have become the song in the second video. Many people might not have stopped to listen to the people in the first videos AT ALL. People say they like music, but they often can’t tell real talent or a rough diamond until it is polished and produced for them!
I just want to say that I have seen many talented musicians, singers and song-writers here on HIVE in the short time since I’ve joined. Some of you deserve similar success stories to the two people I have highlighted in this post. You may never be lucky enough to find the fellow musicians and the producers to help you turn your music into well-produced hits… but that does not mean that the talent is not there.
You’re closer to these people, and the “Stars”, than you think…

Hoy, en lugar de cantar una canción, pensé que me gustaría hacer un comentario a todos ustedes en la Comunidad Musical HIVE...
Ejemplo 1
Mira este video de un tipo tocando una canción en un restaurante local o algo así. Definitivamente se está sirviendo comida que el público está comiendo, y muchos de ellos están charlando entre sí en lugar de centrarse en la música. El balance de sonido no es bueno, la guitarra suena fuerte y las voces son suaves. Un tipo cualquiera intenta acompañar al artista con la percusión (coctelera y cajón), pero a mí me parece que no ha oído la canción en su vida. Todo esto me parece una especie de micro abierto de aficionados:
Ahora veamos este vídeo del grupo "Black Pumas" tocando en directo en estudio su fabulosa y conmovedora canción "Colors", nominada a los Grammy. El vídeo tiene más de 192 millones de visitas en Youtube:
¿Notas algo? Espero, querido lector, que seas lo suficientemente musical como para darte cuenta de que es la misma canción cantada por la misma persona.
Ejemplo 2
Veamos otro ejemplo más cercano a mi casa, en Ciudad del Cabo (Sudáfrica)... Mira este vídeo de un chaval cantando una canción en un programa de televisión local de madrugada. El chico parece tímido y su guitarra suena metálica, sin ningún espectro de graves. Tal vez puedas decir que tiene un tono de voz característico. ¿Puedes decir que la canción es muy buena?
Veamos ahora este vídeo musical oficial en el canal de YouTube de Will Linley. Ha acumulado más de 900 000 visitas, ¡un éxito asombroso para un artista sudafricano que canta en inglés! La canción es un éxito absoluto y ha sido muy escuchada en la radio por lo reconocible que es al instante:
¿Notas algo? Sí, sí, es el mismo chico cantando la misma canción. Obviamente, en el vídeo oficial cuenta con la ayuda de otros músicos maravillosos para completar el sonido, y luego tiene una gran producción para convertirlo en algo tan bueno y apto para la radio.
Will Linley sigue pareciendo humilde y feliz de hacerse una foto con un admirador (yo) cuando está recogiendo flores en la tienda de la gasolinera local. Jajaja.
Entonces, ¿qué quiero decir? Bueno, en ambos ejemplos, lo que quiero decir es que mucha gente no sabría que la canción del primer vídeo podría haberse convertido en la canción del segundo. Mucha gente no se habría parado a escuchar a las personas de los primeros vídeos. La gente dice que le gusta la música, pero a menudo no sabe distinguir el verdadero talento o un diamante en bruto hasta que se pule y se produce para ellos.
Sólo quiero decir que he visto a muchos músicos, cantantes y compositores con talento aquí en HIVE en el poco tiempo que llevo desde que me uní. Algunos de vosotros merecéis historias de éxito similares a las de las dos personas que he destacado en este post. Puede que nunca tengáis la suerte de encontrar a los compañeros músicos y a los productores que os ayuden a convertir vuestra música en éxitos bien producidos... pero eso no significa que el talento no esté ahí.
Estás más cerca de estas personas, y de las "Estrellas", de lo que crees...
Con este pensamiento en mente, le deseo unas felices fiestas y la mejor de las suertes en la persecución de sus sueños en 2023.
