Here again, I am trying to master and understand the basics of illustration. Yesterday, I thought, why not cross a vampire with an elf, two creatures out of the ordinary, between legend and magic? Of course, both are anthropomorphic, and if it weren't for the fact that one has long and sharp fangs and the other, long pointed ears; they would pass as any human. The one I drew would never go unnoticed because of his pale skin, stocky build, and bloodshot eyes scattered in a yellow sclera.
Imagine meeting one of these around the corner, what would you do, would you try to strike up a conversation with it, or would you run for your life?
While the reputation of vampires evokes an enigmatic and fatal attraction, elves have a less clear image, somewhere between benevolent and evil as the case may be. I don't consider myself an expert on the subject, like you, I only know what comes out of fantasy and horror movies and books like J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings.
In this sense, I propose to write a micro-story based on this hybrid being to explore an eventual encounter with it. What do you think? Sounds interesting, right?
In the meantime, I give you some snapshots of the progress of the character's creation. By the way, I don't know what to call him, just as the cross between a lion and a tigress is called Libre, I suppose the offspring between elves and vampires would be called Vamelf. Sounds far-fetched. Maybe it would just adopt a name like any of us. Ha ha ha ha.

Aquí de nuevo, intentando dominar y entender los fundamentos de la ilustración. Ayer, me dije, por qué no cruzar un vampiro con un elfo, dos criaturas fuera de lo normal, entre la leyenda y lo mágico. Claro, ambos son antropomorfos, y si no fueran, porque uno tiene colmillos largos y filosos, y el otro, largas orejas puntiagudas; pasarían como cualquier humano. Bueno, el que dibujé nunca pasaría desapercibido por lo pálido de su piel, contextura fornida y sus ojos rojos como la sangre, esparcido en una esclerótica amarilla.
Imagina que te encuentras con uno de estos a la vuelta de la esquina, ¿qué harías? ¿Tratarías de establecer una conversación con este, o correrías despavorido por tu vida?
Si bien, la reputación de los vampiros evoca a una atracción enigmática y fatal, de los elfos se tiene una imagen menos clara, entre lo benévolo y la maldad, según sea el caso. No me considero experto en el tema, al igual que tú, solo sé lo que aflora en las películas de fantasías y terror y de libros como el de J.R.R. Tolkien en El Señor de los Anillos.
De hecho, me propongo con base en este ser híbrido escribir un microrrelato para explorar un eventual encuentro con este. ¿Qué te parece? Suena interesante, ¿verdad?
Mientras tanto, les doy unas instantáneas en progresiva de la creación del personaje. Por cierto, no sé cómo llamarlo, tal como el cruce de un león con una tigresa se le llama Libre, supongo que la progenie entre elfos y vampiros sería llamado Vamelf. Suena descabellado. Quizás solo adoptaría un nombre como cualquiera de nosotros. Ja, ja, ja.

Drawing the human head and torso, over and over again, is fundamental to internalizing the proportions and symmetry. Of course, these change according to the perspectives you want to portray. For the moment I am satisfied with the frontal and half body. The complications of postures and gestures will come.

I have observed many digital artists, outlining the sketches to prepare them for coloring. Of course, that depends on technique and expertise. Some apply the brushes on the faint lines of the sketch without having to outline them previously and they look spectacular. I'm still years away from this. So, I outlined it and made some decisions on how I wanted the hair to look. Yes, I know, at this stage it's still playing with the general idea, but if I come up with it I apply it. By then it might be too late and I might miss the idea.

Hay quienes sobre las líneas tenues del boceto aplican los pinceles sin tener que delinearlos previamente y le quedan espectacular. Aún estoy a años luces de esto. Así que, yo lo delineé y tomé algunas decisiones de cómo quería que se viera el pelo. Sí, lo sé, en esta etapa aún se juega con la idea general, pero si se me ocurre la aplico. Coloring your drawing is one of the most difficult and fun actions. I say this because it requires knowledge of theory and practice, depending on your project: realistic portraits or comic book characters; and not to mention, complex expressions such as surrealism or abstract that explore the subconscious. For now, I stick to modest projects like this one. My strategy: follow the sequence of the artists, here at Hive; go from the general to the particular. You may have noticed that I first colored the skin, then everything with hair: hair, eyebrows, and whiskers; then I went to the details of the eyes and mouth. Finishing with applying lights and shadows.
Colorear tu dibujo, es una de la acciones más difíciles y divertidas. Lo digo porque requiere de conocimiento de teoría y práctica, según sea tu proyecto: retratos realisticos o personajes de cómics; y ni decir, de expresiones complejas como por ejemplo el surrealismo o abstracto que exploran el subconsciente. Por ahora, me quedo con proyectos modestos como este. Mi estrategia: seguir la secuencia de los artistas, aquí en Hive; ir de lo general a lo particular. Habrás notado que primero coloreé la piel, luego todo lo que lleva pelo: cabello, cejas y bigotes; para luego dedicarme a los detalles de los ojos y la boca. Finalizando con aplicar luces y sombras.
Who wants to see Vamelf naked? Not me! So, I gave him a chromatic medallion based on two inverted triangles, and visualized him inside a river. By the way, who knows if vampires bathe? Elves probably do, living in the woods, in nature.

What did you think of Vamelf? This creature doesn't look so terrifying, but just like a bear, knowing its lineage, it would be good for us to stay away as much as possible.
I'm ready for my next challenge: to create a short story featuring Vamelf.
