Life is not what we are trying to achieve; it is what we have right now (LT/ENG)

There are days or even weeks when it seems like nothing in life is going the way I’d like. Endless problems arise at work, and financial worries consume my thoughts. Disagreements with loved ones add to the strain. Or perhaps I begin to doubt myself and my abilities, feeling dissatisfied with my worth and the decisions I’ve made. A sense of guilt sets in. Or maybe I simply long to be understood, valued, and acknowledged. Suddenly, life feels merciless. I start to think that the problems will never end: no matter how hard I try or how much effort I put in, things still veer off in a direction I didn't intend. Naturally, I begin to overthink and search for answers, trying to understand what is happening and why. I want to resolve everything immediately right here and now. Yet, the more I think, the deeper I sink into my own thoughts.
However, as the years go by, our perspectives inevitably change. Mine certainly has. I believe this shift occurs because I am becoming increasingly aware of my own impermanence. I realize that with each passing day, I have one less day to live. I understand that I cannot control everything in life the way I might wish - after all, I cannot change other people. I can only change myself and my own perspective. I certainly do not have the power to resolve every situation exactly as I would like. In my youth, I was full of ambition. Through constant activity and work, I sought to discover the meaning of life and gain recognition; diplomas, certificates, and new challenges were meant to prove my worth. I wanted to show both myself and those around me what I was capable of and how much I was worth. Striving, creating, and completing endless tasks - that was my daily ritual. I believed that my value depended on what I had achieved and how many people noticed or appreciated it.
In my youth, I was full of ambition. Through constant activity and work, I sought to discover the meaning of life and gain recognition; diplomas, certificates, and new challenges were meant to prove my worth. I wanted to show both myself and those around me what I was capable of and how much I was worth. Striving, creating, and completing endless tasks—that was my daily ritual.
However, as I mentioned, one’s perspective changes over the years. Today, I increasingly seek and find meaning in simple, everyday things. I am still learning to notice this, though I have already discovered things that bring me peace. In fact, I stopped watching political programs a long time ago and rarely turn on the television at all. Instead of chasing the news online, I prefer to go for a walk. If the weather doesn't permit a walk, I read, cook, or simply listen to music. These activities calm me and do not burden my mind with tension.
Tačiau, kaip jau minėjau, bėgant metams požiūris keičiasi. Šiandien vis dažniau prasmės ieškau ir randu paprastuose, kasdieniuose dalykuose. Vis dar mokausi tai pastebėti, nors jau atradau dalykus, kurie man suteikia ramybės. Tiesą sakant, jau seniai nebežiūriu politinių laidų ir apskritai retai įsijungiu televizorių. Užuot vaikiusis naujienų naršant internete, mieliau einu pasivaikščioti. Jei oras neleidžia pasivaikščioti, skaitau, gaminu valgį arba tiesiog klausausi muzikos. Ši veikla mane ramina ir neapkrauna įtampa mano minčių.>
When I go for a walk, I like to observe the trees and the clouds. It is in those moments that inner tension subsides. Just look at how naturally trees exist in the here and now; they live without dwelling on the past. They do not need to constantly replay yesterday’s conflicts in their minds or feel the pain of childhood traumas. Trees do not worry about what others think of them. They do not plan their lives years in advance. They simply grow and exist, even if a storm breaks their branches.
People, however, spend so much time in the world of their own thoughts. They dwell on the past, which none of us can change, and the future, which does not yet exist. Yet life unfolds in every moment. It happens constantly: as we walk down the street, observe the trees, or feel the breath of autumn. It happens when the sun illuminates the treetops and we gaze at the sky, squinting against the light. Life happens when the aroma of cooking food fills the home. It happens when we listen to our favorite music. It happens when we are with someone with whom it feels good to both talk and share silence. Life does not vanish when we hear children’s laughter; it stays with us even when we are simply standing in line at a store.
Žmonės gi tiek daug laiko praleidžia savo minčių pasaulyje. Jie narplioja praeitį, kurios niekas iš mūsų negali pakeisti, ir ateitį, kurios dar nėra. Tačiau gyvenimas vyksta kiekvieną akimirką. Jis vyksta nuolat: kai einame gatve, stebime medžius ar pajuntame rudens dvelksmą. Jis vyksta, kai saulė apšviečia medžių viršūnes, o mes žvelgiame į dangų, prisimerkę nuo šviesos. Gyvenimas vyksta, kai namai prisipildo gaminamo maisto aromato.
This does not mean that if we stop thinking about problems, they will simply disappear and never return. Of course, we must resolve conflicts and find ways out of financial difficulties. We have to handle these matters and, at times, make tough decisions. Yet, it is certainly not necessary to be looking for a solution to some problem at every single moment. Sometimes, the first step to take is simply to breathe deeply and just be.
I constantly remind myself that not every difficult day necessarily means a difficult life, and that I don’t have to solve all my problems today. After all, my worth does not depend at all on the good or useful things I’ve accomplished today; it is enough for me simply to live this day. It feels so good to live, realising that I don’t need grand goals or to prove anything to anyone. I no longer want to strive to be better, stronger, or more successful. I understand and accept that every hardship on my path is simply another opportunity for personal growth.
Man pakanka tiesiog gyventi šią dieną.
Yet there is one thing I can always control: my thoughts. I know there will be days again when everything feels overwhelming, and in those moments, I will remind myself of that simple truth: life is not something we are trying to achieve; life is what we have here and now.
