The former Soviet States are stuck with borders that didn't make sense 30 years ago, are rife with corruption, and simmering cultural disputes which make the Donbas secessionist movement entirely understandable.Gaza isn't an independent state. I don't want to make excuses for Russia, but Ukraine hasn't exactly acted in good faith either.

As for Israel and Gaza, people keep talking about a two-state solution, but it remains at best a vassal state entirely dependent on Israel. Gaza should have an open seaport, but they are effectively under a naval blockade. They rely on Israel for power and water, as demonstrated by those utilities being shut down by Israel. The actions of the Israeli government subsuming Palestinian villages and displacing people is deeply unjust. The populace was first plundered and subjugated by the Ottomans for centuries, and then the British redrew the map after WW1, and now we see people being stripped of their homeland.

None of this justifies terrorism, but a deeper examination of undeniable historical facts reveals why there is a lot of tension, and when people are desperate, they sometimes snap and do evil things. It's inexcusable, but also understandable. This new collective punishment of Gaza for the actions of a few under a government the vast majority had no say in (even if you buy the myth of democracy) is just more fuel on the fires of hate. Do we blame the Jewish victims of terrorism for the injustices committed by the state of Israel? I hope not. And they actually have something resembling a functional democracy. Why is it rational to blame all the Arabs in Gaza for Hamas terrorism?

Warning people to leave before their homes are bombed is not just war, it is terrorism. Demanding people displaced from their homeland to follow the rules of international war is hypocrisy. To make another analogy, it resembles the way native sin America were herded onto reservations and treated like second-class citizens in their own homeland, deprived of the way they used to sustain themselves, and collectively punished whenever anyone went raiding.
