The NATO issue is definitely what spurred Putin's initial invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine has every right to join NATO if it chooses to, but Putin disagrees with me. What's happened since then has been absolutely tragic for all of Ukraine and many Russians too, especially those with a moral backbone.
Are you alluding mainly to the invasion of Gaza? Let's see things from Israel's point of view. A neighboring pseudo-state, one that Israeli's military left in 2005, to allow for them to be self-determining, launched an invasion. Men with guns and other arms attacked Israel's civilians, mostly, and some military. The attacks were absolutely cold and brutal. Women and children were raped, and some killed right after. Children were killed in front of their families and some were beheaded. And many Israelis were taken hostage, with women and probably children facing ongoing rape and torture. And on top of all that, the barbaric perpetrators released as much video of their acts as they could, as if they were somehow in the right.
This invasion was a direct attack on Israelis, but also an intentional indirect attack on Gaza's people. Hamas attacked so that Israel would have to respond, with the ultimate goal of their strategy the destruction of the state of Israel and all of its non-muslim people. But in the meantime, for their strategy to succeed, they need to be an indirect cause to make Gazans suffer and die. Hamas is party culpable for any death and destruction in Gaza. Instead of building Gaza, they've stripped it of resources in opposition to Israel and now Gaza has even less due to their attack.
Israel could do more to reduce destruction and death. Although I can't believe the Gaza Health Ministry's reports, because they're Hamas. Lying about and inflating a body count is crucial to their strategy. Israel's armed forces and politicians have to balance being humane and just towards innocent people with the factors in play:
There is an urgency to neutralizing an armed combative force that just raped, kidnapped, and murdered >1000 of their citizens including children. And had the gall to show it to the world, as if they were in the right.
Many of those militants were not and are not wearing uniforms.
Many people in Gaza, a critical mass of them, probably a majority, supported Hamas enough to allow them to commit their atrocity. They may continue to support Hamas militarily, either out of ignorance of what actually happened on October 7th or in full support.
It would be difficult for the Israeli people to accept high casualty numbers for their military in an invasion. Higher casualties may increase long term or permanent disdain for the people living in Gaza.
For international relations, it's in Israel's interests to not seem more barbaric than Hamas, and I don't believe they are anywhere close. However, I believe that Hamas' remaining government institutions like the Ministry of Health are gaslighting the world as part of their overall strategy. October 7th was a play by Hamas, an incitement to this invasion, to turn the world against Israel. Information warfare is a huge part of that strategy.
So far, from what I can tell, the Israeli government, army, and/or Mossad have done the following to reduce deaths of innocent/non-combative people:
Suggested they move to the South Gaza. Much easier said than done as mass population migration comes with huge issues, but safer than staying and being human shields for a terrorist state that will not win the conflict.
They warn people before airstrikes, both with direct phone calls (example) and then "roof knocker" warning shots. Granted, this usually does not give people enough times to collect their belongings. But the method does its best to preserve life. If there's one main point of criticism that Israel deserves in its response to the October 7th massacre it is that the airstrikes have been overused and cruelly so. But they probably justify it to the point of reducing their own soldiers' casualties.
Israel cannot fail to effectively respond to what happened on October 7th. They must balance the factors I mentioned above. They are not acting as cold and as brutal as Russia's armed forces, nor are they acting anywhere near as evil as Hamas' militants. They have given Gaza a chance to live in peace and Gaza has failed. They have little choice but to occupy it indefinitely, and I hope they are able to facilitate the future Gaza's education and rebuilding to a point where a lasting peace and prosperity can be achieved. It is difficult for me to write this as I feel like I am justifying wrongs, but I have thought a lot about what the most effective and necessary long-term resolution for this situation and I think Israel actually does know best about how to carry it out.
