I am starting to wonder whether I should abandon the very idea of home ownership. Poeple are now floating 40 year mortgages, and when the economy is uncertain, there's no way in hell I'll saddle myself with debt beyond retirement age. On top of that is the burden of property taxes, upkeep, insurance, and so forth. Is it really worth it? I could instead try to find a way to be a digital nomad. If I can blog and freelance some drafting projects while travelling, maybe that will be the best solution. "Living in a van by the river" is aspirational at this point.
