(2026 update: this project, like many altcoins and blockchain projects, failed to gain traction. If you think the core idea is still worthwhile, build it better!)

Governments around the world continue to seek control over this new internet frontier, and the DNS system for web addresses is a major weakness. Several governments have already used this kind of central registry process as a simple way to restrict or completely shut down web access for the average citizen. Namecoin tried to fix this issue with a blockchain-based DNS, but never achieved any real progress. Now there's an attempt to build a new system based on BipCoin instead.

Why is this worth a look?

  • It's based on a Cryptonote coin rather than another Bitcoin fork, providing greater security and anonymity in all transactions
  • BipCoin already has a market as a functional coin, and can still be easily mined on a desktop computer.
  • There is already a GUI wallet for Bipcoin coin on both Windows and Linux, making adoption easier for the average computer user and offering a simpler foundation for web access through the blockchain. The code for website resolution already exists and can be plugged in seamlessly
  • The developers already have experience in Namecoin software development and integration with standard browsers
  • This resolves problems not addressed by TOR and VPNs, but can doubtless be used with TOR or a VPN to enhance browsing security
  • There's a cat in the logo. How can you go wrong?

More is detailed in the whitepaper here, and an Indiegogo campaign to properly fund development is here.

Note: I am not an expert in altcoins, web development, or blockchain theory. Asking ME in-depth questions about this won't get you anywhere.
