Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire established in 1185. The town consisted of three fortresses on the top of three hills above Yantra river. The main fortress where the emperor and patriarch lived was called Tsarevets. The other two’s names are Trapezica and Sveta gora.
During the Middle Ages Tarnovo was among the main cultural centres in Europe.
