Discovering Bulgaria: sun, sea and mixed feelings
I’m going to be completely honest.
Bulgaria wasn’t my first choice for this holiday, but as my friends fancied a change of scenery, I gave in.
And because we’d booked a 4-star hotel, I did have certain expectations.
Unfortunately, once I got there, I realised it was slightly different from what I’d hoped for.
We stayed at the Sunrise Blue Magic Resort in Obzor, on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.
An all-inclusive holiday, so in principle everything was within easy reach to relax and enjoy ourselves.
Our stay at Sunrise Blue Magic Resort
The hotel itself was all right.
The service was fine and the staff did what was expected of them.
Still, I felt something was missing that’s quite important to me personally on holiday: that spontaneous friendliness and openness that makes you feel truly welcome.
The feeling that you’re seen and appreciated.
The staff struck me as rather reserved.
Everything went smoothly, but it all felt a bit distant.
Of course, not everyone needs to be effusive or overly friendly, but it’s precisely those little spontaneous moments that can make a stay so much more pleasant.
I was also a bit disappointed with the hotel’s décor.
By Dutch standards, I found the whole place to come across as a bit shabby and old-fashioned.
As it’s a fairly new hotel, I must admit I’d expected it to be a bit cleaner and have a more modern feel.
Perhaps I’ve been spoilt by what I’m used to at home, but I do think it’s something that adds to the overall holiday experience.
Food, drink and entertainment
Fortunately, I have little to complain about when it comes to the food.
It was well prepared and there was a fair amount of variety.
Of course, certain dishes did recur regularly, but within an all-inclusive package I found the selection perfectly acceptable.
I wasn’t so keen on the entertainment.
I found it rather lacklustre, and the programme seemed to be virtually the same every day.
For people who like to get actively involved in activities or are looking for a bit of variety in the evenings, I feel there could have been more on offer.
Unfortunately, out of the nine days we stayed there, I only saw one live performance at the hotel.
Perhaps I missed performances elsewhere on the resort, but that also suggests that communication about the entertainment programme was very limited.
Fortunately, there was the swimming pool, the beach and the various bars where you could pop in for a drink.
These are, of course, great elements for a sun holiday.
With a pool bar and a beach bar, you don’t have to walk far for a drink and you can really enjoy the outdoors.
But even there, not everything was entirely clear.
Some drinks were included in the all-inclusive package and others weren’t.
If you came back a day later, things had changed again. Then you had to pay for a drink that had been free the day before.
No, the logic often eluded me.
An afternoon in Obzor
During our holiday, we spent one afternoon visiting the little town of Obzor. We had a drink somewhere and then took a leisurely stroll through the village.
When on holiday, I always think it’s essential to see a bit of the local area. You don’t have to go out every day or have a packed itinerary. Sometimes it’s actually nice just to walk around, soak up the atmosphere and sit at an outdoor café.
Obzor was a nice change from our stay at the resort. It wasn’t a major excursion, but it was a chance to do something a bit different from the usual routine of the hotel, the swimming pool and the beach.
The atmosphere in the hotel
Another thing that struck me was the mix of guests. We mainly came across local Bulgarian guests and Ukrainian holidaymakers.
There were also some German guests, but we didn’t meet any other Dutch people during our stay.
That doesn’t have to be a disadvantage in itself. In fact, a different mix of nationalities can make a holiday interesting.
Nevertheless, I noticed that this hotel was geared more towards a different sort of tourist, and so the atmosphere and surroundings didn’t quite match what I’d expected from this holiday on the Bulgarian coast.
Looking back, I do wonder whether we’d chosen the right location.
Perhaps we should have looked a bit more towards Sunny Beach.
I might have found a hotel there that better met my expectations, with a different atmosphere and perhaps a bit more liveliness.
Of course, that’s just speculation, as I can only judge the place we actually visited.
Would I go back?
I’m glad I got to discover Bulgaria and that we made a holiday of it. It was lovely to get away from it all for a bit, enjoy the swimming pool and the beach, and not have to cook for myself thanks to the all-inclusive package.
Still, I found that, as time went on, I was mainly looking forward to going home – to my own surroundings, my own things, and the luxury and comfort I’m used to at home.
It might sound a bit spoilt, but sometimes it’s during a holiday that you realise just how much you value the things you take for granted at home.
I didn’t think the Sunrise Blue Magic Resort was a bad hotel.
The service was fine, the food was well prepared and the facilities offered plenty of opportunities to relax. But for me, it lacked that little bit extra: the warm welcome, the well-kept appearance and the variety that can make a holiday truly special.
Perhaps it was a case of choosing the wrong location, or perhaps my expectations were simply different. Either way, I’ve been able to add another destination to my list.
And to be honest? When we flew home from Varna Airport, I was mainly just glad to be returning to my own familiar luxury. Sometimes, coming home really is the best part of the holiday!

My conclusion
Bulgaria didn’t quite win me over on this holiday.
But who knows, perhaps another spot on the Black Sea coast might be worth a go one day.
If so, I’d certainly take a closer look at the location and the hotel I choose.

Ben jij weleens in Bulgarije geweest?
Groetjes Meraki7578 ❤️
