On Friday (27th of April) at Lukavac, near Tuzla in the afternoon, the dam of the factory "Sisecam Soda" landfill broke and dropped a large amount of poisonous alkaline liquids (pH 12) that polluted the local river Spreča and the surrounding land.
Smell, dead fish and white sands are scenes from the polluted river.
Immediately afterwards, the locals noticed grease spots, whitish color of the river, and a dead fish that was floating on the surface. Fishermens and ecologists point out that air pollution can also be felt.
The white precipitate with an increased content of chloride and sulphate on the surface of water, greasy stains and dead fish near the shore are scenes that can soon be seen on the Sava River.
Experts claim that pollution spreads to Doboj and point out that it could extend trought river Bosna to the river Save and beyond.
According to the first estimates ten hectares of agricultural land was flooded with poisonous chemicals.
