A Tale in the Shadows
Years ago, when I was just a little girl, I used to listen to my mother’s stories. I loved curling up on her lap, whilst the sound of her voice was like the pages of a magical book – one of those books that hold the stories of the world itself.
Her calm, gentle voice invited my imagination to open up, and the images would come one by one. However, when I turned eight, the stories of princesses and fairies vanished, and my mother’s sweet, calm voice became heavy, harsh and robotic, as if it were a computer voice warning of a virus threat.
That story changed my life and, although at the time I still felt they were just stories, they ceased to be so when I turned twelve. My mother’s lips, painted a soft shade of pink; her long hair with a few grey strands that seemed to give it silver highlights; her sweet scent, the same as always; yet her voice and facial expression would change the moment she began her story.
And it began like this…
Beyond the wall that divides the world, between the side of light and the side of shadow, lay a space so small that, without realising it, it united both worlds.
The light, on one side, was so bright that its warmth could be felt in the breeze. That place seemed like a distant, unreal utopia.
On the other hand, on the other side, darkness shrouded every existing space; it was always dark, always cold, with fear permeating every shadowy being.
Inevitably, evil had been born in that dark place; the beings had become restless, wrathful and hateful. They loved to rest their lightless hands on the wall that divided them.
In contrast, on the other side, laughter was the order of the day; kindness and love were expressed openly. These beings, full of hope, overflowed with infinite emotions—the very same emotions that were the envy of their unknown neighbours, whom they had never seen before.
One day, from that tiny hole, a dark being looked out, feeling the envy of wanting to be there, in that place of laughter and constant allegories, and, without realising it, its hard, rigid body began to disintegrate.
It turned into smoke, so faint, so light, that it floated in the dense air of the place that had until then been its home. It then passed through the hole and, for the first time, found itself in the place it had always longed to observe.
Its translucent gaze took in all the radiant beings; its twisted thoughts grew with every laugh, every embrace, and suddenly… suddenly that dark being clung to a radiant being and…
The story always ended at the same point; there was never an ending. I was left in doubt and, my voice trembling with excitement, I would ask Mum what happened next; her answer was always the same… ‘I’ll tell you what happens tomorrow’—though that ‘tomorrow’ was always just like the one before, and the end of that strange story never came.
When I turned thirteen, one afternoon I opened the door to Mum’s bedroom without asking permission; she was looking at herself on the wall next to the window, staring, so still, as if she’d been drawn there. Her reflection on the wall—somewhat blurred, somewhat unsettling—made my skin crawl, even though it wasn’t cold. ‘Mum,’ I whispered faintly as the shadow on the wall leaned forward as if it were really looking at me.
The shadow’s hand rose ever so slightly, as if trying to give me some kind of signal; then I saw, first one finger, then three, and finally two; that was the secret signal for help that Mum and I had made up when I was five. After a few minutes, Mum reacted; she recoiled in terror and fell abruptly to the floor; her hands were sweaty, she was trembling from head to toe, her eyes reflected horror, and her inaudible voice was trying to say something I couldn’t make out.
When she finally calmed down, she said to me: ‘The end of the story.’ ‘Do you want to know?’ Her voice was a fragile thread, more terrifying than any scream; the curiosity simmering in my chest was evident, and I nodded. I avoided breathing heavily so as not to break her concentration, and she began; yet, for some reason, I felt afraid—a strange and overwhelming fear.
The room, once bathed in sunlight, now felt icy. The silence had grown heavy and harsh, as if the air had gone stale. I watched her intently, unable to make a sound. I could only look into her eyes, which were no longer Mum’s, but two dark wells reflecting a terror that was not her own. She wasn’t breathing; I didn’t dare to either; and for that brief moment, time stood still so that the truth might pass to the other side.
Then, at last, she began her tale, as if reciting a funeral prayer—one she knew by heart for some strange reason.
The being of shadows, upon reaching the light, almost ceased to exist; the light was so powerful that it eradicated every trace of evil.
The enraged shadow, in a fit of desperation, without knowing how, without knowing why, clung to a being of light, became its shadow, taking the being of light as the vessel of its existence.*
The shadow grew so strong that wherever the light went, the shadow went too. But that being wanted more and, with inhuman malice, slowly learnt how to swap places with the light.
The evil, dark and vile being takes advantage of the light to swap places; it envelops you in a chant that no one else can hear, and suddenly that being is outside and our soul is on the other side.
Since time immemorial, the shadows have changed, and the beings of light, trapped, follow the light of their own bodies; these are the shadows that accompany us. Some are the evil beings that seek to trap us, whilst others are our own realities seeking to return to the place where they belong.
My mind was lost: reality or a lie? I asked myself that question constantly. Years went by and one day Mum changed: her eyes were dull, her voice hoarse, her hands cold; meanwhile, her blurred shadow made the signal that only I recognised, and it was then that I realised that story was true and that the wandering shadow from hundreds of years ago had earned its right to live, whilst my mother was perhaps struggling to return or was right where she’d always wanted to be.
