In this critical episode Basil Davidson chronicles the European Division of Africa (Scramble for Africa) at the Berlin conference of 1884 in Graphic detail. The title is derived from King Leopold II of Belgium who declared his determination during the scramble for African territory to secure for himself a large a slice as possible of ‘this magnificent African cake’. Starting out on a West African shore where new European commercial interests had come to replace the old slaving ties. The films shows a variety of locations to examine the character and effects of the European colonial division of the African continent & the major destruction caused to the African peoples.
