—¡Otra vez llegando tarde Susana! ¿Hasta cuándo tendremos que soportar tus irresponsabilidades? —

—Ey, solo te he hecho esa oferta.

Susana's sigh was felt throughout the building, the sweat from her hard work consumed her to the max, and although she wanted to give up, in her mind came the memories of her 3 small children, for whom she would give her life, if it were a matter of keeping them alive.

Starting at 5:00am, Susana had to walk 70km to get to the Rotherllier's house, a journey that took her 3 hours each way. Each step, along with the agitation of her heart, was consuming her in her own agony, one that was little understood, and like many other cases, unimportant.

The Rotherllier's, a wealthy family in the area, were considered prestigious and unkind to those who worked for them, yet this was the least important thing to her, whose sole purpose was only to bring the food they gave her, to take it to her little ones, even if it meant she didn't eat a single morsel.

-Once again, Susana, how long will we have to put up with your irresponsibility? -

Just by being 10 minutes late, Susana ran the risk of not being able to take anything home, or even not being allowed to work, returning home with nothing for herself or her children.

Her situation worsened with the Covid virus. Every minute at the Rotherllier's house put her life at risk, as well as that of her family, but this was not something that mattered to them, as they only cared for their own lives, no matter what happened to her.

-I wanted to ask you to come more days every week. Dad is sicker, and we want you to take care of him. We'll pay you $10 a week, but we won't feed you here, so, only if you want to, we'll give you that opportunity-

-Mrs. Rotherllier, is it possible you could give me something else for transportation? -Mrs. Rotherllier, is it possible you could give me something else for transportation? Just to come all the way here, I have to spend $8, and if I do that, I won't have anything to give my children. Please, I beg you -

-Hey, sunshine, I didn't make you that offer. We don't have any more money to pay you, and remember, you're only here because your father was a friend of my father's, otherwise you'd be out on the street by now. So, will you take it or leave it? -

Tears were wetting the sad face of Susana, who knew that they could not only pay her more money for her nursing profession, but also that they could send someone to look for her, or simply give her a place at home to live.
But tears moistened her poor heart, one that was beaten time after time, anxious to someday be able to get out of the situation she was in, a situation in which she had to fight alone because of the death of her beloved husband.

-So what do you say? Answer soon, there are still things to do, and there is not much time available.

-Yes, Mrs. Rotherllier. I thank you for your consideration, and I thank you for the opportunity you are giving me," replied Susana with a crestfallen face, while trying not to cough too loudly.

Her trembling hands and the lump in her throat to keep herself strong, were the only companions of Susana on her way home, ones that made her give in to the oppression of knowing that it would be a day in which she would not eat anything, and probably, neither would her children.

The strong coughs left her with less and less air, but these were not impediments for her to smile at the sight of the three little ones, who with open arms received her after asking for her blessing, longing to quench their thirst, one that had not been quenched since the morning.

That afternoon, it would be another afternoon without being able to eat, although it would not be the first in which they would take their hands, and thank God for being able to live another day and at least be able to hug mom.

Susana's lungs were resisting, the tiredness was becoming more and more exhausting, but her strength to go on prevailed over the desire to give up, besides, knowing that that day would be the day when she would have the money to feed her little ones, pushed her to go on.

Susana's heart was beating slowly, her teary eyes were not enough to fight, her cold blue hands were the beginning of the pain she would feel, no greater than knowing that she was alone, without feeling her children's arms around her.

The covid had entered her, the 10$ promised, had been the reason why she exposed herself to work at the Rotherllier's house, even knowing that her life was in danger, but she knew that those same 10$, would be the ones that would help her children to eat, and would help them to have the strength to endure.

Susana's heart stopped. The people around her only looked at her sideways, while the Rotherllier's only thought she had arrived home drunk, while in Susanna's last moments, only the fondest memories with her little ones were passing by.
