L'estremità accesa viene tenuta a una distanza di 2-3 cm dalla pelle sopra il punto di agopuntura, muovendola con movimenti circolari o "a beccheggio" (su e giù). È il metodo più comune e versatile.** Moxa su ago: un piccolo pezzo di moxa a forma di sfera o cubo viene infilato sulla parte superiore dell'ago di agopuntura. Una volta acceso, il calore si irradia lungo l'ago fino al punto di agopuntura, combinando i benefici dell'agopuntura e della moxibustione. Moxa con interposizione: un cono di moxa viene posizionato su una fetta di zenzero fresco, aglio o sale, che a sua volta è posta sulla pelle.
