When you're sifting through your junk mail...

You see this envelope that says "Use the card. Do more."

They know you're going to throw it away. Or if you open it, you'll likely toss it. So they have to get their message in immediately.

Are they telling me that by using my Home Depot card, I can do more work around the house? Build more fences, install more sinks, fix more plumbing?

Or are they really telling me something else subliminally:

Yup, I see what they did there. They're saying what every credit card company wants to say to you. Rack up a bigger debt with us. Use the card more.

Subliminal Marketing

This is a little known technique to plant ideas and emotions into the minds of people quickly and subliminally. We don't even realize we are effected by these techniques. Our brains are not always filtering what we see, there is an "unreasonable" element to our minds that responds to commands and brings about emotional responses.

We also respond to subliminal flattery:

When skimming through something quickly, our eyes focus on the first word and sometimes the last word of a sentence. Put the two together for a feel good message.

Aww thanks for that. Maybe I'll use the card more. And all this with a glance at from an envelope that i'm not even opening!
