Under Construction, that's the title of the post! And that's exactly what you'll see here. A genus of ants, which I identified as Iridomyrmex*, was building its nest in the ground when I found the colony.
Under Construction, das ist der Titel des Beitrages! Und genau so werdet ihr es hier sehen. Eine Ameisengattung, die ich als Iridomyrmex*, identifiziert habe, baute ihr Nest in der Erde, als ich die Kolonie gefunden habe.
*Camponotus singularis
Actually, I'm not too interested in ants. I don't find it particularly exciting to watch them dragging finds back to the nest. But here I was lucky again to observe something special.
Eigentlich interessiere ich mich nicht zu sehr für Ameisen. Ich finde es nicht sonderlich spannend ihnen zuzusehen, wie sie Fundstücke zurück in das Nest schleppen. Hier hatte ich aber schon wieder Glück etwas Besonderes beobachten zu können.
The ants did not transport anything into the nest, but out. Look at the pictures and pay attention to those ants carrying clods of earth around when you see them.
Die Ameisen transportierten nicht etwas in das Nest, sondern heraus. Betrachtet die Bilder und widmet eure Aufmerksamkeit jenen Ameisen, die Erdklumpen herumtragen, wenn ihr sie seht.
An expansion or new construction, whatever it is, it's fun to watch.
Ein Ausbau oder Neubau, was auch immer es ist, es macht Spaß zuzuschauen.
In and out, tirelessly. First I had looked at the entrance, only little can be seen due to the lack of light. Let's look at what happens in front of the nest.
Rein und raus, unermüdlich. Zuerst hatte ich den Eingang betrachtet, nur lässt sich aufgrund des fehlenden Lichtes nur wenig erkennen. Also weiter im Programm. Schauen wir uns an, was vor dem Nest passiert.
From above, it all didn't look very organized. Sometimes I could have sworn the ants come and go in groups to the surface, but I think that's just coincidence.
Von oben betrachtet sah das alles nicht sehr organisiert aus. Manchmal hätte ich schwören können, die Ameisen kommen und gehen in Gruppen an die Oberfläche, aber ich denke, das ist nur Zufall.
Once again looked at the entrance, there could be something new. But no, everything as usual, like a conveyor belt.
Noch mal zum Eingang geschaut, es könnte ja etwas Neues geben. Aber nein, alles wie gehabt, wie am Fließband.
Ok, the following picture shows a female soldier that had shown herself. Unlike the workers, I have been able to see very few of the female soldiers. I claim now not to have to point out the female soldier. The double size is immense. Maybe the appearance of few female soldiers is a good sign, which means the ants are safe in this place.
Ok, das folgende Bild zeigt eine Soldatin, die sich gezeigt hatte. Im Gegensatz zu den Arbeiterinnen habe ich von den Soldatinnen nur sehr wenige sehen können. Ich behaupte jetzt, nicht auf die Soldatin hinweisen zu müssen. Die zweifache Größe ist unüberschaubar. Vielleicht ist das Erscheinen von wenigen Soldatinnen ein gutes Zeichen, welches bedeutet, die Ameisen sind an diesem Ort sicher.
The next ant we'll take a closer look at is one that found interest in a leaf. All the others have ignored the leaf, except just the one shown.
Die nächste Ameise, die wir uns genauer anschauen werden, ist eine, die Interesse an einem Blatt gefunden hat. Alle anderen haben das Blatt ignoriert, außer halt die gezeigte.
The leaf was laboriously pulled towards the entrance. I watched for a while what the ant would do and the others around her. And she had to continue to handle the leaf alone, for whatever reason. The riddles of life.
Das Blatt wurde mühsam Richtung Eingang gezogen. Ich beobachtet eine Weile, was die Ameise tun würde und die anderen um sie herum. Und sie musste weiterhin alleine das Blatt handhaben, warum auch immer. Die Rätsel des Lebens.
Where the clods of earth are deposited seemed arbitrary. It is obvious, however, that the material was transported further and further away from the entrance. Almost as if the ants wanted to avoid creating a hill. If this is so, then it would not be arbitrary at all.
Wo die Erdklumpen abgelegt werden erschien willkürlich. Ersichtlich ist aber, dass das Material immer weiter weg vom Eingang transportiert wurden. Fast so als ob die Ameisen es vermeiden wollten einen Hügel entstehen zu lassen. Wenn dem so ist, dann wäre es gar nicht mehr willkürlich.
