Actually, the story is self-consistent. Imagine a place where all the buildings on earth are skyscrapers and there are dozens of lanes of roads. And of course, big cars, buses, etc. to suit the situation. Imagine no animal ever lived. Imagine hundreds of times the yield from plants. The earth is wide enough, I think it might :))
