Anticipated Istanbul Earthquake & My Monthly Author Challenge! #27
Hello everyone, I hope you are well. Today I read the 20th prompt of Inkwell and the topic was Anticipated Suffering, Anticipated Worry. As soon as I saw the phrase "something to put you not to sleep" given as an example, lightning struck in my brain and I started writing.
I am sure many of you have heard about the disaster that occurred in Turkey on February 6th. A friend of mine prepared and shared a help post about it and thousands of people supported it. Maybe you, who are reading this article, also supported. The 7.7 magnitude earthquake killed more than 40,000 people in Turkey and left millions homeless. Some of my friends have been left homeless and some of my friends' families have died. This is a very sad situation.
We were reminded that Turkey is an earthquake country. Experts say that Kahramanmaras had an earthquake that would be in the top 10 of the biggest earthquakes on land. In some areas, the earth's surface has moved 7.5 meters. 40-meter fissures have formed and mountains have shifted. This is a terrible fact. It is also very painful that thousands of people died there.
Kahramanmaras and 9 provinces around it were greatly affected by the earthquake. Istanbul, where I live, is 1000 km away from Kahramanmaras, so we never felt the earthquake. But we felt the pain. What I really want to come here today is this. Experts say that there will be an earthquake in Istanbul. An earthquake of about 7.5 magnitudes is expected here where I live. And I don't feel safe at all. I don't think I, my family, my friends, and relatives here are safe either!
The news reports talk about how flimsy the buildings in Istanbul are, how sea sand was used in their construction, and how the iron in the columns is either rotten or too little. Many professors list the districts with the bad ground in Istanbul and the district I live in is one of them. As such, I cannot sleep at night. Kahramanmaras earthquake at 04:17. The 1999 Istanbul earthquake took place at 03:02. I can't sleep in case the Istanbul earthquake also happens at night, I fall asleep in the morning. My quality of life is affected.
This 7.7 magnitude earthquake caused 90 thousand buildings to be heavily damaged and thousands of them collapsed during the earthquake. What if the building I live in collapses too? This fear makes it really hard for me to sleep. Imagine you sleep one night, and you can't wake up. You sleep and when you wake up, your family is gone. Your house is gone. You wake up under the rubble. There will be another big disaster in Istanbul due to unplanned urbanization, narrow roads, lack of access to the rubble, and lack of gathering areas for survivors. It is estimated that between 100.000-500.000 people will die if this big earthquake occurs.
Istanbul, which is a single city with a population of over 16 million people, will be affected by the rupture of 80 km of fault in the Marmara Sea right next to Istanbul, and the coastal part of Istanbul will be completely affected, I think the number will be much higher than these estimates. I hope this earthquake never happens. I hope it will not be feared.

Türkiye'nin bir deprem ülkesi olduğunu hatırladık. Uzmanlar Kahramanmaraş'ta karada gerçekleşen en büyük depremlerden ilk 10'una girecek bir depremin meydana geldiğini söylüyorlar. Bu korkunç bir gerçek. Orada binlerce insanın ölmüş olması da çok acı verici.
Kahramanmaraş ve çevresindeki 9 il depremden büyük oranda etkilendi. Yaşadığım yer olan İstanbul, Kahramanmaraş'a 1000km uzak, yani depremi hiç hissetmedik. Ama acısını yaşadık. Bugün burada asıl gelmek istediğim noktaysa şu. Uzmanlar İstanbul'da da bir depremin olacağını söylüyor. Yaklaşık 7.5 büyüklüğünde bir deprem burada yaşadığım yerde bekleniyor. Ve ben kendimi hiç güvende hissetmiyorum. Kendimi, ailemi, buradaki arkadaşlarımı ve akrabalarımın da güvende olduklarını düşünmüyorum!
Haberlerde İstanbul'daki binaların ne kadar dayanıksız oldukları, inşaatlarında deniz kumu kullanıldığı ve kolonlarındaki demirin ya çürüdüğü ya da az olduğu anlatılıyor. Bir çok profesör İstanbul'daki zemini kötü ilçeleri sayıyor ve yaşadığım ilçe de bunlardan biri. Hal böyle olunca geceleri uyuyamıyorum. Kahramanmaraş depremi saat 04:17'de. 1999 İstanbul depremi de 03:02'de gerçekleşti. Beklenen acı gerçeğimiz, İstanbul depremi de gece olursa diye uyuyamıyorum, sabaha karşı uyuya kalmış oluyorum. Hayat kalitem etkileniyor.
7.7 şiddetindeki bu deprem 90 bin binanın ağır hasar almasına ve binlercesinin deprem anında çökmesine sebep oldu. Ya benim yaşadığım bina da çökerse? Bu korku uyumamı gerçekten zorlaştırıyor. Düşünsenize bir gece uyuyorsunuz ve uyanamıyorsunuz. Uyuyorsunuz ve uyandığınızda aileniz artık yoklar. Eviniz yok olmuş. Enkaz altında uyanıyorsunuz. İstanbul'da çarpık kentleşme ve dar yollar yüzünden enkazlara ulaşım, kurtulanların toplanma alanı yetersizliği yüzünden büyük bir felaket daha yaşanacak. Eğer ki bu büyük deprem gerçekleşirse 100.000-500.000 arasında kişinin öleceği tahmin ediliyor.
Nüfusu 16 Milyonun üzerinde olan tek bir şehir olan İstanbul'un hemen yanındaki Marmara denizinde yer alan 80 km'lik fayın kırılması, İstanbul'un sahil kesiminin komple etkilenmesi söz konusu, bence bu tahminlerin çokta üzerinde bir rakamla karşılaşılacak. Umarım bu deprem hiç yaşanmaz. Umarım korkulan olmaz.
