They were not cleared for caring, technically they shouldn't be doing this. They were Pax Humanis after all. Don't give a damn, they held the child firmly but gently and ran as fast as they could to get to med station, and to escape the forest fire. -- Lessons
Some laws of the universe are incontrovertible. Don't eat anything that smells nasty. Don't drink anything that smells foul. Never leave a crying child in a place of peril.
Even when you're one of the most dangerous members of Pax Humanis.
One of the other incontrovertible rules is Never let a murderer near a baby, but these were clearly extenuating circumstances. Slash would pay for it later. Incarcerated safely away from society, with every kind of remedial lesson on what should have been done in the circumstances.
Right now, a baby needed to be taken to safety. Right now, Slash's hands were the only ones available. Right now, it was real difficult to avoid contemplating murder for the guardian that left the baby behind. She didn't have all the facts. She didn't have a contract on whoever-they-were.
She just had fire all around, thanks to that maniac who had been on her kill list.
Such a pity that bitch was dead. Slash would have loved to kill her again. Only much, much messier. Pour encourager les autres. Such a pity that time could only move forward.
Outrun the fire. Find the safety of the nearest emergency depot. There! The drop-ships of the CRC. Where so many marines had poured out to quell or otherwise manage the chaos. Where so many were sent for treatment and help now that the dead idiot had set fire to this world's only forest.
"Five deep breaths and hold it," ordered slash. "We're going for a big jump and it's going to be real hot, but only for a little."
The kid listened. Obeyed. There was just something about orders from a psychopath that bypassed any other upset and keyed straight into following. They held their breath just as Slash leaped through the flames. Little fists tightened in their clothes as Slash ran on.
"You did good. You can breathe again," Slash managed. "Just a little further."
The rubble of the fallen wall slowed Slash down. The engineers adding walkways to the piles hadn't got to this area, just yet. She sought out the nearest white pennant and the attached person in bright, reflective Service Orange.
"I'm with Pax Humanis, and I found a baby. Per instructions, I wish to surrender them to the nearest qualified caregiver."
He pointed to the nearest Medical Drop-ship and said, "In there. I'm just traffic control."
Slash could only breathe easier when the kid was finally in good hands.
