It was the stare, more than anything else. Daiz had an unblinking way of viewing the world. A habit of standing just a fraction too close. An air of alertness not often seen outside of the wild. The closest domesticated analogy that Captain Gorx could reach was that of a Skitty hunting down something fast and scurrying.
Then again, Terran cats were Earth's deadliest predatory by weight before the genetechs got their hands on them.
Human Daiz may just be a contender for the title. She walked in silence, watched everything, and seemed to be taking mental inventory of strengths and weaknesses. It was a very nervous and sleepless first week.
Human Daiz did not explode. She did not detonate. She did not go off, as other Humans might say. When danger at last came too close, she merely put herself between the hazard and her crew.
She did not take arms against a sea of misfortunes. She didn't need to. She had herself, her skills, and every loose object within a reasonable reach.
What she did with them was the frightening part.
When all you have is a hammer, the Terran saying went, all problems look like a nail.
The tool that Human Daiz had in her arsenal was unmitigated violence. Any loose object became a weapon. One that she had, apparently, expert training in.
The attackers never stood a chance.
Then, with shocking tenderness, Daiz hunkered down and helped Crewmate Yoss with his survival breathing. Helping keep him focussed on staying alive until the Emergency Response Teams arrived with the right kind of tranq's.
Daiz helped tuck him in to the ERT patient stretcher.
"You will be well," said Daiz. More of an order than an expression of hope. "I will come visit later."
Gorx was still trying to unpack whether that was a promise or a threat for weeks.
