It'd been a very hard week. All I want is to sit down and forget this week, to be honest. You're a therapist, you know what it's like? All I really want is a cup of coffee and something to read. Hey doc., when will my eyes be fixed? -- Anon Guest
[AN: Hey OP? OP? Ow... That's one hell of a kick in the pants. Well done]
"Three more days," said the soothing voice of Therapist Ka'renn. Ze was always so cheerful and upbeat. "Your new eyeballs are almost mature, replete with their optic nerves. They look like cute little jellyfish."
I chuckled in spite of myself. In spite of the mood that weighed me down of late. "The small mercies are a little too small at the moment," I said. "It's all too heavy. I want to lie down and sleep the rest of the wait away, but..."
"But you're an active person and need to move at speeds far greater than you're capable of at the moment."
"Asterisk, capable of without injuring myself. And I know, in the bad old days I'd have to learn braille and get a dog or... learn to echolocate. I should be glad I'm getting new eyes in three days. But... I'm stuck. I'm stuck on this big wall made of, I can't read for three days, or, I can't jog for three days. It's a mountain and I'm on slow-arse chair lift just... waiting... to get over it... and the PA is always playing All I Want For Christmas is You."
"Sure it's not Jinglebell Rock?" teased Ka'renn. "Or Little Drummer Boy?"
"Those were the last two weeks, Doc. This week it's that. Three more days. If there aren't complications. But this is going to be the longest three days of my life."
"Longer than the three days in which you lost your vision?"
Oh. Right. That was worse. For starters, it hurt more. "Probably a tie, then. Definitely a tie. Like, they're both equal bags of suck, but for different reasons."
In three days, they would open up my skull and insert those 'cute little jellyfish' into my head, with some nice nerve-bonding hormones and anti-rejection drugs to keep things in place. After that was another day or two of darkness as my skull knit back together. And then... Then the bandages could come off, and I would have to be in specially calibrated darkness, with new eyes that had never seen before.
But I would be able to see. And then read. Admittedly, it would be large print on a calibrated screen, but I could read.
I think I'll begin with Pratchett.
