He made the blankets to show how deeply he cared for the crew he served with. They got together to think of a way to show how they felt about him, things he may enjoy, that made him happy. They'd gotten to know him well over the years. But they didn't want to buy him something. Like his gifts to them, they wanted to make him a gift from their hearts.

"We got you something," said Companion Dyosh. There was a cluster of Havenworlders holding a suspiciously large and festive container. All of them were also very suspiciously pleased with themselves.
"What are you little skinks[1] up to?" Juude couldn't help but smile.
"For many thanks out of staying with us," said Captain Friss. Their grasp on GalStand was not as strong as it could have been. "We making this for you."
"Aaaww..." Juude cooed, and opened the box.
It was a patchwork coat, without the JOAT stripes[2], and made out of seemingly random hexagons of fabric. Recognition struck after a moment's confusion. "That's from the curtains at Hotel Butterfly... this is the tablecloth from that one place with the curry shrimp... That's a bit of Cap'n's holiday shir-- Did you guys chop up some of your relax-wear?"
"Only the stuff that was nearly dead, as you would say," confessed Dyosh. "The rest was bought, begged, or 'borrowed' from refuse[3]."
The lining was made with actual tailoring in mind. When Juude put it on, it became evident that they had taken the measurements from his armoured livesuit. It was loose and floppy and Juude loved it.
"Oh this is perfect for keeping me warm in Public Space AC[4]. And it's the best kind of warm. Thank you." There were tears in his eyes.
Happy tears. How very Human.
[1] An affectionate term, not a slur, for reptile-based Havenworlder species.
[2] JOATs wear coats that are also patchwork, and generally overloaded with pockets. To denote their actual areas of expertise, there are stripes of the relevant colours on one or both shoulders.
[3] It's not stealing if they've thrown it away.
[4] Where the setting is permanently on "Arctic Hurricane" to combat the heat of anticipated crowds.
