Humans are too eager, sometimes, to protect us. We appreciate it, we rely on it, we've become highly dependent on it. Some of us... may have even grown weaker, relying on our living shields far too much. They are far too willing to throw their lives away for us, we must get them to see, their lives are worth just as much as ours are. -- Lessons
It is universally agreed that Humans, as a species, are insane. They have to be. Look at how willing they are to throw away their lives so that others can survive. Once devoted to their pack-mates, they will do literally anything for the greater good. Well. What they believe is the greater good.
There has to be a way to make them stop.
On the subject of tempering the Human impulse to step in the way of Death, Companion Rav was fast becoming an expert. On their good days, they could damn their body corporate for only choosing to have Rescue Humans as Ships' Humans.
It was the way they believed they were living on borrowed time. It was the way they already believed they were expendable cogs in a greater machine. It was heartbreaking.
Their latest rescue, a Human named Quorna, had survived a near-death experience. Whilst they were still recumbent in Medical, Rav did their job to keep their Human company. There had to be a reason to make this Human want to live.
It came to Rav by accident. As they were chatting away in-between sharing stories to distract Quorna from the pain.
Rav said, "I know we have only known each other for a year and a half, but I do not want to imagine my life without you."
In the short term, it did not look like a good thing to say. Human Quorna leaked from their eyes and made a soft whining noise. They did reach out with their one mobile hand to pat Rav, always a good sign.
But it was those words, on that day, that caused a turnaround.
Human Quorna started exercising their caution more socially, warning everyone of potential threats and engaging their safety equipment before venturing further.
The accident reports dropped to almost zero.
The instant Rav knew this cause and effect, the life hack went out on the infonets for free.
Let your Human know they are important to your existence, and they will cease trying to kill themselves so much.
