As a child, I was always told a lot about how we have to respect others in order to be respected. The importance of being cordial and respectful to everyone, regardless of the environment or the people around us. The fact that we have to have values and that it doesn't matter how they treat us, if we do everything right, what counts is knowing that we're doing good deeds. But things really change when we come to see certain points that aren't entirely fair or equitable.
And it's precisely when we begin to see that no matter how we act as we're taught, we don't receive or don't feel respected. We realize that respect isn't really something that comes from actions, but from wanting them. As the years went by, people began to call me hateful or shocking for this very reason. I didn't like that those I respected by rule or upbringing treated me completely differently. Sometimes, they were even racist toward me as a child, and I simply had to keep quiet and be respectful.
And that's where my grandmother's teachings have a lot of influence, because she was the one who raised me with the current mantra of "don't do what you don't want done to you" and from there she always told me that you shouldn't let yourself be respected, that you have to respect those who truly respect you and that sometimes it's better to give respect to yourself than to those who don't value this and will take it as a game.
Therefore, my behavior is a matter of seeing before acting. Of course, one is cordial and values-based, and initially shows respect. However, if this is not reciprocal along the way, it is better to set our boundaries and not fall into hypocrisy. And yes, I know that sometimes there are people who simply have a very curt manner and are neither respectful nor treat others with values and courtesy. However, the line between treating others poorly and simply avoiding what we don't want or avoiding those people who are insincere is something we must know how to limit and be very clear about.
Certainly, respect is a very important value and an action that greatly influences the way of thinking and how each person's upbringing is instilled. However, we must know where, with whom, and when to do it, and above all, we will always deserve the same respect in the same amount and proportion in which we give it ourselves. Therefore, respecting others to be respected is fundamental, as a way of always being aware that we are what we give.
And that is what my whole way of being is based on, something that does not change and is reinforced in every conversation with my grandmother when she tells us these tips and ways of being so that we are aware of each different value and how we should apply it, always adapting to our own essence.
So, well, this is my contribution to this topic brought to us by @danielvehe, and I hope my point of view provides a further perspective on how each person shows and acts with respect. Thank you very much for reading.
