Isn't their current raison d’être simply to control the population to force it to work to enrich those in power? (And not just political power)
While there are some countries that seem to actually factor in organizing for improved welfare for citizens than would be likely under anarchy, it does seem that in general national boundaries are about carving up the spoils of capitalism.

Edit: My point being that I don't see that ending so long as capitalism exists, yet can't imagine an economic system the functions without capitalism. How do you organize for the provision of cars, cell phones, and cell networks to people all over the world without something like capitalism doing the organizing?
