how would we define the term orphan? In the Old Testament ‘orphan’ is a Hebrew word meaning ‘fatherless.’ The Bible most times refers to “widow” and “orphans” together, which makes sense if the term is defined as fatherless. A child whose parents are dead, unknown, or have permanently abandoned him or her. In common usage, only a child who has lost both parents due to death is called an orphan.
Of the nearly 140 million children classified as orphans, 15.1 million have lost both parents. Evidence clearly shows that the vast majority of orphans are living with a surviving parent grandparent, or other family member. 95 per cent of all orphans are over the age of five. If more fathers fulfilled their God-designed role of caring for their families, loving their children and being faithful to their wives, we would not have an orphan problem/crisis. We who have Christ in us share His heart and therefore share the burden to care for these children. That is why we are called Christian which means Christ like.
Adoption is an act of love. It must come from a desire to love a child. It must be motivated by our love for God. It must be because we want to raise a child for God as a demonstration of our love for God. Every child is a gift from God. Remember you are alive for a reason for Christ.
