Hello, fellow cinephile friends! I’ve almost finished watching a new series, though I’m now having second thoughts about continuing. Sometimes we let ourselves be swayed by reviews, trusting that we’ll enjoy the show too—but that’s not always the case. Let me tell you what this series is about and why it failed to meet my expectations.
🎥 Siempre bruja🎥
Always a Witch
What some consider a masterpiece might leave others—perhaps those of us with higher standards—wanting more; after all, pleasing everyone in the entertainment world is difficult. This series has its flaws—for me, it isn't a masterpiece—but I give the creators credit for the attempt. Watching a Latin American series with its specific approach to special effects is a different experience than watching a U.S. production.
In Always a Witch, we see a group of young people striving to tell a compelling story. I’ll admit the plot is genuinely interesting; had it been filmed in the U.S.—with the budget for high-end special effects, set design, costumes, and acting—it would undoubtedly have been a huge success. That wasn't the case here, though. Still, I give them credit for the effort; pulling this off in Colombia was, after all, quite a challenge.
The story centers on a super-powerful young witch who travels through time, moving from her own era to a more modern-day Cartagena—a stark contrast to the colonial Cartagena she knew. So far, so good. We then watch the story unfold as this disoriented young woman encounters things she doesn't understand—objects and concepts completely foreign to her. That is, of course, how it’s supposed to be.
However, the series has plenty of rough patches. Aside from the special effects, the spells themselves—how they are presented, the incantations used, and the way they are visualized—clearly lacked sufficient development and better production quality.
As I mentioned, the plot is interesting but of very poor quality. When I started watching it and saw what it was about, I just kept thinking it needed better production values, better effects, and even better acting. There’s no denying it—perhaps they were young filmmakers just starting out—but it lacked that spark needed to make it truly engaging and exciting.
On top of that, it’s hard to classify it as a comedy, drama, or sci-fi series. It’s a blend of all three genres, but poorly executed; it isn't funny, the characters' emotions fall flat, and the sci-fi effects are nothing special—far from extraordinary.
Anyway, the series has two seasons; I might barely tolerate one, but the other? I don't think so, haha. Still, if it appeals to you, give it a shot—just don't come complaining to me. You won't find anything exceptional here; it’s a low-budget, low-quality series lacking great acting or effects, though it is modestly entertaining. 😆
