The word Hemiptera comes from the Greek: hemi meaning "half" and pteron meaning "wing." This insect's distinctive feature is its forewings, which are thickened at the base and thin, membrane-like at the tips. Hemiptera's uniqueness extends beyond its wings. Both nymphs and adults possess sucking mouthparts that pierce plant tissue and suck out its fluids. [¹]
