"Could you make dinner tonight? I have already sliced the pork; veggies are washed and drained too," I proposed to the hubby yesterday evening. I had missed his cooking during our stay in BC. He has a knack for making simple comfort food taste better. "Sure! How would you like them done?" He responded.

"Surprise me," I teased, knowing he'd do his own magic.

Our lil abode smelled delicious minutes later. That is one of the reasons I love when he takes over the kitchen. The table was set before 7, and we enjoyed his savory stir-fry with lettuce harvested from our lil hydro garden, seasoned with care. Less salt and soy sauce, but tasty nonetheless. No photos taken, unfortunately.

We have been consciously adjusting salt, soy sauce, and other condiments in our meals. It is one of the adjustments we made since we agreed to be more mindful of what we consume. Although sometimes we can't avoid them, especially when we are eating out. We tend to fall for crispy fried stuff.

We enjoy the crispy crunch, and then console ourselves with a small serving of veggies on our plates, or a healthier dessert option, like a cup of yogurt topped with freshly sliced fruits (grapes, apples) and whole almonds, which we recently discovered at one of our usual dining places.

Another challenge, especially for a sweet tooth like ours, is cutting down on sugar. When we are low on energy, the default move is to crack a chocolate bar. When thirsty, we sip mango juice instead of plain water. We choose sweet cookies, cream-filled chocolate cake bars, or ice cream for daily snacks, over the apples in the fridge.

Upgrading to a healthier lifestyle isn't as easy as it sounds. It's not like there is a switch we can push or flip and things change in an instant. It is more challenging than we ever thought, but we are navigating it slowly, one step at a time.
