I felt sorry for Walker. Indeed, sadness can devour a person's mind. Being drowned in sorrow for losing someone important can drive someone out of their sanity.
I just couldn't imagine if I were on the shoe of someone who has witnessed a human transformation to weird creature. I might've been petrified if it were me.
