It was my Neighbor's baby’s dedication, as at that time our both families were close so helping out in the preparation for their big day was no big deal.
I woke up that morning, had my bath, and dashed to their house, I love babies so whatever celebration you’re organizing for them I am always at the forefront!
I did the little I could do to hasten up with the preparations so we all could go to church on time because that was one basic requirement for the dedication of the baby, you attend the church service first before you come back home for the reception.
While everyone was trying to get their various tasks done, I was called by my neighbor’s wife to help her iron her dress, she had so much to do and we were running late for the church service already, I quickly took the dress and headed to their laundry room to do the needful, I was so happy that day and looking at the beautiful dress in my hands I was really fascinated of how much time and craft was put into making the dress.
I am not a professional fashion designer but I have a knack for designs, I can design a thing or two whenever the need arises, so my paying attention to details in designs stems from my love for designing.
So I got carried away in my world, thinking about the dress, getting all excited that I was fully involved in all the activities that I wasn’t paying attention to the dress on the ironing board and the iron in my hands, the moment I put the hot iron on the dress that was it! The dress got burnt, I mean the beautiful dress I was in awe of got burnt right in front of me due to my carelessness.
This was a big mistake, wishing the ground to open and swallow me was an understatement I wanted to just vanish into thin air ASAP😩
Have you ever been so scared or worried that you become hysterical? That day I was laughing and pacing uncontrollably, where do I go from here? I asked myself. That was the one time I really wished the magical wands I see in movies and cartoons would actually appear before my very eyes and help me undo this disaster.
How do I tell this lady that was patiently waiting for her dress that I mistakenly ruined it? I started crying, I was in the laundry room for a long time before I realized that crying would never undo what was already done, the earlier I told my neighbor about the ordeal the better for me and that would give her more time to initiate plan B.
I knew going to tell my neighbor alone was going to be a bad idea, so I immediately went to call my aunt, I showed her the dress and she exclaimed, I started another round of weeping again😭😭
My aunt’s attention shifted from the burnt dress she was holding in her hands to calming her niece who was distraught😂
My aunt and I went to meet my neighbor to explain everything to her, and the moment we got there I started crying again, this time I even went down on my knees to show how sorry I was before we knew what was happening my neighbor started laughing and she said: “is that why IB wants to kill herself?” For a moment I was lost, wasn’t she supposed to be mad at everything Instead she was concerned about me. I didn’t stop apologizing nevertheless, she later told me she had a new dress that her husband bought for her and that she was just going to opt for that and fix the burnt dress after the ceremony.
I begged her not to worry that I was going to fix it to show how sorry I was but she immediately shoved the dress right from my hands and asked me to wipe my tears and get ready for the dedication.
It was that day I knew that indeed good people truly exist.
Ever since that day, I vowed to always be careful whenever I am in front of an iron.
