All good plans tend to fail. It's a fact of life, a rather sad one at that. Moreover, it's immensely frustrating. Who wants to make a great plan only to have it fail when it's attempted?
That's basically my way of excusing myself for getting practically nothing done today. I really have no right to slack off - for the first time in close to two months I actually had a decent amount of free time on my hands, more than enough to finish what I need to do and take a nice, long, relaxing break.
At least, that was the plan.
But then reality set in. I was actually busy for much of the morning - by the time I was free it was practically noon. Still, I figured I had more than enough time, and proceeded to waste a couple of hours looking at steemit posts, reading, playing a couple of old games - the works.
And by that point it was late afternoon. Still plenty of time to get productive work done, if not quite as much as I had expected.
But... I figured I should take the chance and visit my old school. It had been a good couple of years, and it's an old tradition for former students to visit.
So I swung by. A lot had changed, I could see that just walking in. There was a security guard sitting by the front desk, that was certainly new. She sent me to the secretary, who informed me of a few things
A) A few of the old teachers I had planned on visiting had retired - and that shook me. It really did. Some of these people were settings in the school, it just didn't feel right with them gone.
B) I wasn't allowed to walk in on any of the etchers who were giving classes - I could only visit those in between classes, or during recess. That was... way too different for me. I still recall, from that not too distant childhood of mine, those random, usually fun days when old students would walk in. The teacher would smile, greet them, assign us little kids some work to keep us busy - or not - and catch up with their old former student. Everybody involved enjoyed the process (except for possibly the administration, but they often didn't mind it either, seeing as they usually got a couple of visits of their own).
C) I would need some form of I.D. to get past the security guard. That just seemed wrong - as soon as I'd walked into the office the secretary had greeted me (I'd come late often enough to get to know her ;), a couple of teachers had greeted me, everyone recognized me - it seemed pretty clear that I was who I said I was. And yet still I needed an I.D.
I didn't have one. So I headed back home.
And then... family responsibilities. It's always the family responsibilities. I was dragged into doing a couple of things I had anticipated - just not today - and a couple of things I hadn't expected, figuring I would just be extraneous, unnecessary, redundant, extra, and unnecessary. In fact I was - but that fact couldn't get me out of standing around basically holding items while everyone else went about doing productive things.
And there went my day! Somehow without any of those productive things I had wanted to do actually getting done. Oh well, I suppose there's always tomorrow.
(To fail again)
(I should stop being such a pessimist)
At this point, my bed is calling, so I'll probably wait 20-40 minutes to heed its call out of sheer obstinacy, then hit the sack.
