Today I share with you some good news, last April 28th my dog Muñeca received her first vaccination. The idea of vaccinating her had been in my head for months, so I decided to investigate prices, indications and precautions before carrying out this important journey. I went to several farms and I found different prices for the single dose, 15$, 18$ and 20$, not to mention that you have to deworm them previously and pay a veterinarian, here in Venezuela everything is expensive.
What inspired me to make this decision was precisely that I do not want to make the same mistakes of the past, without forgetting how important and necessary vaccination is. My biggest fear is that my beloved pet will catch deadly diseases such as hepatitis, parvoviroris and the dreaded distemper. A few months ago the news of an outbreak of distemper and hepatitis in my city spread on social media and that alarmed me a lot. These diseases are terrible and I say this from experience.
Between so many expenses of maintaining the home and basic care of Muñeca, I had to organize myself to gather and be able to acquire the vaccine and all the expenses that this entails. Among the indications prior to the vaccination, I had to deworm the dog so that he could receive his dose. First of all, I had to observe the dog, make sure it was not sad, down, without appetite, in short, that it did not show any symptoms of being sick, vaccinating it that way is dangerous. Doll is healthy, as always playing with that overflowing energy that characterizes her, breaking things to distract herself, running everywhere when she gets excited and with that voracious appetite impossible to satiate. This is an indication that she was ready to be vaccinated.
The first thing I did was to bathe her, it was her turn, her face was a poem, she doesn't like to be bathed. As soon as she saw me grab the chain and the shampoo, she looked for a way to hide, but she was not spared a good bath that left her clean and smelly. I also left her bed clean, she is happy after the bitter drink of water and soap, she starts to run and invites me to play, she likes the smell of clean. The next day, I gave her the single dose of deworming, she doesn't like medicines either, she makes a face that I can't even tell you, that was fast, I only had to wait a few days to give her her vaccine, she was just a step away from having her protected.
When the day arrived, I went to buy the doses, there were two little bottles, one with the powder and the other with the liquid, both had to be transported in ice. Before there were several doses, but now, according to what I was told, it is only one application. The diseases against which the canine is protected are: distemper, parvovirus, coronavirus, hepatitis, adenovirus, parainfluenza and leptospirosis. Among the indications, I was told that I had to be alert post vaccination, after having received the dose you have to observe the dog again, because there may be side effects, such as lack of appetite, fever and decay.
Thank God, Doll had no reaction, she kept her good mood, always wanting to play, she did not lose her appetite at all, as usual she made gestures with her head pointing to the bag of dog food on the table, as if she was saying "there it is, give me some". She is still my companion in the evenings while I watch TV, she peeks out the patio door and calls my attention by touching the fence with her little paws to let her in. Then she lies on the couch until she decides to go to her bed to sleep, in short, everything is normal and I am very grateful for that. I feel happy because she is now protected against those terrible evils and I really feel very calm.
Why is it important to vaccinate our dogs?
The need to create antibodies to protect them is as important for our pets as it is for us humans. Unfortunately, I speak from my own experience, I had pets that suffered from parvovirus and distemper. With parvovirus we lost many dogs and with distemper I lost two, I had to put them down, a dog I had adopted and another canine in street condition that I was protecting. Years ago I adopted a puppy that was only 2 months old, she was crying in the street, it was a cold night in February. She got very sick, first with parasites and then with distemper, it affected her respiratory system. When I took her to the vet the day after she manifested the symptoms, he told me that it was a little late, in spite of that, he did his best to save her life and he succeeded.
The diseases against which the sixfold or octuple vaccines protect against are highly lethal. Parvovirus gives us time to save the animal, even distemper, which attacks the respiratory system, as long as it is treated in time. However, I lived the worst experience with distemper that affects the nervous system, the dogs suffer a lot, convulse and lose abilities. Unfortunately, this disease has no cure, the neurological and motor damage is irreversible. In addition, the primary symptoms of the disease are not easy to identify because they are very similar to those of other pathologies.
Seeing my dog Muñeca so innocent, who did not ask to be born, who only came to this world to give and receive love, makes me think that it would be a great irresponsibility on my part not to give her her vaccinations. He can get infected, suffer and die in the worst way. We know we are all going to die someday, but we deserve a dignified life. I made the mistake of not vaccinating my pets in the past and I don't want that bad experience to happen again. When I made the tough decision to euthanize those two neurologically damaged dogs, the vet told me that dogs raised on the street are more vulnerable to contracting distemper and other diseases. Distemper is airborne and very contagious. Doll was living on the street and that is why I was very concerned. If you haven't vaccinated your pet, do it, leaving it until tomorrow may be too late. Protecting them is the greatest show of love we can express to our pets.

Hoy les comparto una buena noticia, el pasado 28 de abril mi perrita Muñeca recibió su primera vacuna. Hace meses que esa idea de vacunarla estaba rondando mi cabeza, así que me dispuse a investigar precios, indicaciones y precauciones antes de llevar a cabo esta importante jornada. Fui a varias agropecuarias y me encontré con diferentes precios de la dosis única, 15$, 18$ y 20$, sin contar que hay que desparasitarlos previamente y pagar un veterinario, aquí en Venezuela todo es costoso.
Lo que me inspiró a tomar esta decisión fue que precisamente no quiero cometer los mismos errores del pasado, sin dejar de lado lo importante y necesaria que es la vacunación. Mi mayor miedo es que mi querida mascota se contagie con enfermedades mortales como la hepatitis, parvoviroris y el temible moquillo. Hace unos meses se propagó en las redes sociales la noticia de un brote de moquillo y hepatitis en mi ciudad y eso me alarmó mucho. Estas enfermedades son terribles y lo digo por experiencia.
Entre tantos gastos propios de mantener el hogar y los cuidados básicos de Muñeca, tuve que organizarme para reunir y poder adquirir la vacuna y todos los gastos que esto conlleva. Entre las indicaciones previas a la vacunación debía desparasitar al perro para que luego le fuera colocada su dosis. Primero que nada, había que observar al perro, que no estuviera triste, decaído, sin apetito, en resumen, que no manifestara síntomas de estar enfermo, vacunarlo así es peligroso. Muñeca está sana, como siempre jugando con esa energía desbordante que la caracteriza, rompiendo cositas para distraerse, corriendo por todos lados cuando se emociona y con ese apetito voraz imposible de saciar. Esto es un indicativo que si estaba lista para ser vacunada.
Lo primero que hice fue bañarla, ya le tocaba, su cara era todo un poema, a ella no le gusta que la bañen. A penas me vio que agarré la cadena y el champú buscó la manera de esconderse, pero no se salvó de un buen baño que la dejó limpia y bien olorosa. También le dejé limpia su camita, ella después del trago amargo del agua y jabón se pone feliz, empieza a correr y me invita a jugar, le gusta el olor a limpio. Al día siguiente, le di la dosis única del desparasitante, tampoco le gustan los medicamentos, pone una carita que ni les cuento, eso fue rápido, solo me quedaba esperar unos días para colocarle su vacuna, ya estaba a un paso de tenerla protegida.
Cuando llegó el día, fui a comprar las dosis, eran dos frasquitos, uno con el polvo y otro con el líquido, ambas debían ser transportadas en hielo. Antes eran varias dosis, ahora según me explicaron es una sola aplicación. Las enfermedades contra las que queda protegido el canino son: distemper o moquillo, parvovirosis, coronavirus, hepatitis, adenovirosis, parainfluenza, y leptospirosis. Entre las indicaciones, me dijeron que tenía que estar pendiente post vacunación, después de haber recibido la dosis hay que observar al perro nuevamente, porque pueden haber efectos secundarios, como falta de apetito, fiebre y decaimiento.
Gracias a Dios, Muñeca no tuvo reacción, mantuvo su buen estado de ánimo, siempre queriendo jugar, no perdió el apetito en lo absoluto, como de costumbre me hacía gestos con la cabeza señalando la bolsa de perrarina que está en la mesa, como diciendo “ahí está, dame un poco”. Igual sigue siendo mi compañera en las noches mientras veo la TV, ella se asoma a la puerta del patio y llama mi atención tocando la reja con sus patitas para que la deje entrar. Luego se acuesta en el sillón hasta que decide irse a su cama a dormir, en fin, todo normal y estoy muy agradecida por ello. Me siento feliz porque ya está protegida contra esos terribles males y de verdad me siento muy tranquila.
¿Porque es importante vacunar a nuestros perros?
La necesidad de crear anticuerpos para protegerlos en tan importante en nuestras mascotas como sucede con nosotros los humanos. Lamentablemente, hablo desde mi propia experiencia, tuve mascotas que sufrieron de parvovirus y moquillo. Con parvovirus perdimos a muchos perros y con el moquillo perdí a dos, tuve que sacrificarlos, una perrita que había adoptado y a otro canino en condición de calle que estaba protegiendo. Hace años adopté a una perrita de solos 2 meses, estaba en la calle llorando, era una noche fría de febrero. Ella se enfermó mucho, primero con parásitos y luego con moquillo, le afectó el sistema respiratorio. Cuando la llevé al veterinario al día siguiente de manifestar los síntomas, éste me dijo que era un poco tarde, pese a ello, hizo lo posible por salvarle la vida y lo logró.
Las enfermedades contra las que protegen las vacunas séxtuples u óctuples son altamente mortales. El parvovirus nos da tiempo de salvar al animal, incluso, el moquillo que ataca al sistema respiratorio, siempre y cuando sea tratado a tiempo. Sin embargo, viví la peor experiencia con el moquillo que afecta al sistema nervioso, los perros sufren mucho, convulsionan y pierden capacidades. Lamentablemente, ésta enfermedad no tiene cura, el daño a nivel neurológico y motriz es irreversible. Además, los síntomas primarios de la enfermedad no son sencillos de identificar por el simple hecho de ser muy parecidos con el de otras patologías.
Ver a mi perrita Muñeca tan inocente, que no pidió nacer, que solo vino a este mundo a dar y a recibir amor, me hace pensar que sería una gran irresponsabilidad de mi parte no colocarle sus vacunas. Puede contagiarse, sufrir y morir de la peor manera. Sabemos que todos vamos a morir algún día, pero merecemos una vida digna. En el pasado cometí el error de no vacunar a mis mascotas y no quiero que aquella mala experiencia se vuelva a repetir. Cuando tomé la dura decisión de sacrificar a aquellos dos caninos con daños neurológicos, el veterinario me dijo que los perritos que se crían en la calle son más vulnerables de contraer moquillo y otras enfermedades. El distemper se contagia a través del aire y es muy contagioso. Muñeca estuvo viviendo en la calle y por eso me preocupé mucho. Si no has vacunado a tu mascota, hazlo, dejarlo para mañana puede ser tarde. Protegerlos es la mayor muestra de amor que podemos expresarle a nuestras mascotas.
