오늘은 본격 친환경 캠퍼스 유니스트(울산과학기술원)에서 만끽할 수 있는 특별한 사연을 전해드립니다.

Today, I deliver special stories that you can enjoy at the full-scale eco-campus, UNIST(Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology).

다니고 있는 대학이 워낙 천혜(?)의 자연 속에 자리한 친환경 캠퍼스이다 보니 멸종위기 천연기념물이 살고 있는데요.

Here is an eco-friendly campus that is located in real nature, and the endangered natural monument lives.

먼저 가장 최근에 주목을 받고 있는 멸종위기에 처한 야생동물은 천연기념물 제330호 수달입니다.
The most recently higlighted endangered wildlife is the Natural Monument No. 330 Otter.

수달의 영역은 보통 15㎞로 활동 반경이 무척이나 넓은 동물이라 인근 태화강 상류 또는 대학 내 실개천과 연결된 수원에서 서식하던 수달이 이곳으로 이동한 것이라 추정됩니다.
The area of the otter is usually 15 km wide, and its activity radius is very wide. It is estimated that the otter that migrated to the water source, which is connected to the upstream Taehwa River or the stream in the university, moved here.

이런 귀한 생명을 대학 내에서 직접 볼 수 있으니 정말 놀라운 일이지요.

It is amazing that you can see this precious animal directly in the university.

캠퍼스 내 실개천과 웅덩이를 메우지 않고 기존 수계와 구릉지를 보존하였기 때문에 가능한 일이라고 합니다.
This is possible because we have preserved the existing water system and hilly area without filling up the campus and the puddles.

자연의 흐름이 이어지도록 설계된 까닭에 수달이 서식하게 된 것으로 추정하는 것이지요.
It is presumed that the otter was inhabited because it was designed to continue the flow of nature.

하지만 수달이 마냥 반갑기만 한 손님은 아니었습니다.

But the otter was not just a nice guest.

교내 못에서 서식하던 거위를 3월경부터 잡아먹기 시작했기 때문인데요.
It's because they started to eat goose that had been inhabited from ponds since about March.

이 거위들은 인근 주민께서 저희 대학에 선물한 것으로 수달로 인해 총 7마리 중 3마리가 해를 입었습니다.
These geese were presented to our university by nearby residents, and three out of seven were injured due to otters.

비오는 날 캠퍼스를 대놓고 산책 중인 거위 가족들이 너무 사랑스러웠는데요.

On the rainy day, the goose families who were walking around campus were so lovely.

이런 와중에 수달로 인해 거위들이 해를 입으니 얼마나 안타까웠는지 모릅니다.
We do not know how sorry it was because the otters caused the goose to be harmed.

거위 사체가 캠퍼스 내에서 발견될 때 마다 당혹감을 감출 수 없었지요.
Every time a goose body was found on campus, I could not hide my embarrassment.

최준우 한국수달보호협회 연구원님의 조언에 따르면 “수달은 하천이나 강가 지역에 있어 최상위 포식자로 육지에서 사람보다 더 빨리 달릴 수 있어 충분히 거위를 잡아먹을 수 있다”며 “수달과 거위를 분리시키는 것만이 이 상황의 유일한 해법”이라고 합니다.
According to a researcher from the Korea Otolaryngorea Conservation Association, otters are the top predators in rivers, they can run on land faster than humans and eat geese easily. He said. "Separating the otter from the goose is the only solution in this situation."

이에 대학 운영 관리사 측은 거위를 다른 장소로 격리해 관리 중이랍니다.

So the university management officer is managing the goose in a separate place.

천연기념물인 수달을 포획하려면 문화재청의 승인을 받은 후 전문가를 통해서만 포획이 가능하기 때문에 오히려 피해를 입은 거위가 내쫓기는 상황에 처한 셈입니다.
Because of the law for capturing the natural monument, the otter can only be caught by a specialist after approval by the Cultural Properties Administration. Therefore, the damaged geese are in a situation of being kicked out.

운영 관리사 측은 향후 수달이 서식지를 다른 장소로 옮기면 거위를 다시 데려올 계획이라지요.
The management officer plans to bring the goose back when the otter moves the habitat to another location in the future.
