Kittens have to be separated with their mothers so they can live life in their new homes. If in the wild, kittens will usually stay with their mother until their mother is pregnant again, then the parent will naturally begin to encourage their children to leave
After the child leaves, the mother cat will begin preparations to give birth to her children again. If the parent has no more children, or lives as part of a cat colony, it is usually the kitten who will begin to pull away from her mother when she reaches sexual maturity and starts looking for their own partner.
