The distance from the city of Yogyakarta to the Mount Merapi area is about 27 kilometers. The position of Mount Merapi is north of the city of Yogyakarta. Merapi gate, this is my first stop at about 1100 meters above sea level. Where I can cool down my engine before continuing to the higher areas.
Here we can enjoy the natural scenery and fresh air. At the Merapi gate, camping enthusiasts can rent a tent and enjoy local coffee. From the Merapi gate, continue by vehicle to an altitude of approximately 2000 meters above sea level.
A journey of approximately 30 minutes, park your car and walk to the Merapi Bunker. Locally known as the Kaliadem bunker. There are lots of jeeps to take visitors who want to see the historical heritage of the Mount Merapi area which erupted in 2006.
One of the historical sites is the Kaliadem bunker, built around 2001 and inaugurated around 2005. The Kaliadem bunker is approximately 4,5 kilometers from the summit of the mountain. During the 2006 eruption two volunteers died in the bunker due to the extreme hot ash eruption.
The Kaliadem bunker is now a tourist attraction. Around the Kaliadem bunker area, there are many stalls selling souvenirs for visitors. Such as hats,bags,various accessories. And crafts in the form of mortars for kitchen utensils Made from genuine Merapi stone.
