Before reading further, it is good that you have an open mind, free to think and question and have a minimum idea that mainly religious cultures do not apply only to your coexistence where you were born as the only and "right" in the world.
A quick summary of my life on the issue of faith and religion: I was raised in the religion of the Catholic Church. This is the biggest religion in my country (Brazil), but within my family, especially on my father's side, they were all evangelicals. But my childhood and adolescence was practically 90% in Catholicism and with some goings and "knowledge" of the evangelical side (and that of several churches and "types" that exist in my country). I don't know with whom I learned this, or if it was something natural to me, I never judged other religions, even if others keep saying the opposite and at the same time I never accepted and believed everything I heard from the "leaders". This intensified after my adolescence, in which my "logical mind" started to function more and more. I started looking for answers that the church couldn't give me and not even the bible. This led me to read a lot of things until I got to spiritualism.
I spent a few years attending Spiritism and reading about it, but again not accepting everything I heard, although it was the one that pleased me the most in the sense of teaching us how to be good people to each other. Right now I don't consider myself to have a religion, but at the same time I'm not an atheist. I can't explain how I can't prove anything. But I like to feel good and look for my own inner and spiritual peace. Today I no longer attend the Catholic Church, with some exceptions and not even Evangelical. I try Spiritism with a certain frequency as often as I can, but I don't read or delve into it as much as I used to. I like to go to some places and talk to some "mediums" in order to try to understand, read and see if something really makes sense. And I have some that I really like to talk to.
Recently there was a case in my family that caught my attention, a recovery of a relative in an addiction that seemed to have no end, and which I learned was after some of the family had gone to an "Spiritual Center in Umbanda" .
For you who are not from Brazil, Umbanda is a Brazilian religion, which basically brings together traditions of African, indigenous and Christian religions. It emerged in the early twentieth century, where reports had manifested itself in a young man about to join the army. As in spiritism, they have their "spiritual guides", but those of slave and indigenous origins.
I had a little knowledge of Umbanda, especially when I started selling candles (which I make) to different centers, and some personalized mugs with some of the names of these "guides". However, I had never attended. It was still on my to-do list someday. And the case that happened in my family caught my attention and obviously my curiosity. And as it was close, and somehow "easy" to go, I managed to schedule this last Friday. Ah, by the way, within my family, especially from the evangelical side, Umbandistas were very discriminated against, who did wrong things and on the "evil" side. Well, as I said at the beginning, I have never accepted these prejudices, many are passed from generation to generation and forced to think that this is how it is and that's it.
Yesterday then I went, and I even forgot to ask what the name of this Umbanda center was. The question that all their tradition, their ritual and the way they meet each other caught my attention a lot, and I really liked it. Even though I heard reports, I had never witnessed it and I felt very welcomed by everyone. Now, I intend to go back a few times to learn more about their customs, stories and obviously start to create my own questions above everything I "learn". As I've attended a lot of Spiritist centers, I could observe that a good part is "equal", just changing some names, meanings and mainly the tradition.
My final report is: Regardless of what you believe or not, the important thing is for you to find a place and find your place where you can feel good, whether with a religion or not and especially that these teachings that you discover or learn from others , are to make you a better person, without prejudice and always help others! Only then can we make a better world ;)
