What do you think death is?
I LIKE TO THINK that death is the transition, the waking from the dream to a reality that's far older than all of existence.
If we are talking about some religious or mystical viewpoint on consciousness and death, about the metaphorical or metaphysical sense of the phrase that's not something we can be sure, nobody can answer that question.
But if we are talking about the literal sense of "after death," then no. When you are dead, you are dead. The body stops working altogether. You can not feel pain, process pain, or respond to pain. You are dead. There will be no sensation of pain after death. Death is never painful, but dying can be, but let`s hope not.
From a biological viewpoint, decomposition of the cells starts only when all the life functions stop. If you can still experience the pain, you are therefore by definition alive and not dead. Dying on the other hand happens while you're still alive, and that may hurt, but again hopefuly not, it all depends on the way you die. Who knows exactly what the last seconds feel like, when your brain has pretty much stopped working? I have never seen anyone die, but from what I know, if it happens in a hospital, it looks peaceful, sometimes, with drugs and all that, so there is no reason to think that death has to be painful. Death is not painful for the person going away, it is for the ones who loved him or her.
ATP (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adenosine_triphosphate) is stockpiled in our bodies to last a few seconds at any given time. ATP is what fuels your muscles, heart included yes. If ATP is no longer made by the body, which is the case soon after you die, the body runs out of ATP and with no ATP, blood will no longer reach to the rest of your body. Without blood pumping throughout your body, oxygen and essential chemicals are no longer reaching the brain and when the brain runs out of potassium and sodium, the brain stops transmitting AND receiving action potentials.
So what is it exactly that causes us to feel pain? The action potentials which are translating the information in our brains! Without action potentials, there is no receiving or translation of information and without those, there is no sensation of pain, so no! People fear the idea of dying and its associated loss of control, of power, loss of assets, prestige and fame, beauty, etc, rather than death itself.
