December 2017 - There is a gift for the homeless between the bank towers of Frankfurt at Christmas. This is ensured by the street angels.
December is a cold month. In some streets in Frankfurt am Main very special. When the bank towers force the wind into the roadside, a cold breeze pulls even through thick jackets, goes into sleeping bags, lets the skin and lips crack within a few hours.
And yet, December is not just a bad month for the homeless. "It's an ambivalent time," says Sabi Uskhi, "In no other time is the homeless given as much money as during the Christmas season. At the same time, they realize that they have no family. "
Sabi Uskhi takes care of the homeless. About four years ago he founded the aid organization Streetangel Frankfurt e.V. Actually, in almost every free minute he is out on the street trying to help. At Christmas, however, it is a very special affair of the heart to him. He senses that this dichotomy can also be dangerous. For example, when the full money cup seduces you to fill the void with an extra portion of alcohol or drugs. That's also why he launched the campaign "Christmas in a shoebox".
It works like this: If you join in, pack a shoebox with presents, add a little card and hand it over to him and Sabi organizes a Christmas gift with his club angels.
The channels used by Streetangel's gift boxes have long since become independent: the retired couple, the socially committed family and, again and again, entire school classes are taking part in the campaign. Sabi: "It's simple things that make the homeless happy: a scarf, disinfectant, soap, gloves, a cap, chocolate."
Learning effect included
Many go to great lengths, wrap up the boxes with care, write colorful cards or, as a little girl did, put a guardian angel in the box - combined with the wish that this should accompany the recipient from now on. And so street angels with "Christmas in a Shoebox" also see donors grapple with those who otherwise disappear into parks, house entrances or subway shafts. And when people in the street are looking forward to things that are just there in the home, it grounds so many expensive wishlist.
The street angels know the places where homeless people are. At Christmas, they make their rounds, sit next to them and take their time for a little gift: "This is an emotional moment," says Sabi. For many homeless, counting not only the gift, but also the feeling that someone has thought of them somewhere. "There's a tear rolling down your cheek."
These are the situations that are also a little nudge for the street angels: "If someone who has nothing to laugh at smiles - that's just beautiful," says Sabi.
